OptiPlex Small Form Factor Plus 7020 Memory Upgrade

Hi everyone,

I have an Optiplex 7020 SFF Plus with 16GB of RAM (8GBx2 DDR5 DIMM 5600MT/s)

I bought a Patriot 32GB kit(16GBx2 DDR5 UDIMM 5600MT/s) but when I removed the old ram and installed the new ram, the PC doesn't like the new ram.

I thought the ram was not seated properly, but still no luck.

What am I missing here?

According to the service manual specs here, 16GB is the maximum for the 7020SFF. Keep in mind that you have an 11 year old system and the specs for that era were more restrictive that much newer systems. In a pinch you could try pulling the CMOS battery for 15 minutes (and install a brand new battery) then install the new battery. It may not work but it's worth a try.

Hi there,

Hmmm, the PC was purchased last year and according to the Dell Support site, I have support until 2027. I can reply with the service tag if it is safe to do so here.

@Zabka Sorry, my bad. I looked at the legacy model. Dell does at time use a previous model number on new systems. Assuming you have the i5 14600 CPU, that should work. Did you try pulling the battery yet? It is possible that the RAM is not compatible. Dell can be touchy and over the years it has been found that Crucial RAM is the most compatible.

@JOcean I will try pulling the battery once the user allows me to work on their station. Good to know that Crucial RAM is the most compatible, I've used Crucial or Patriot over the years without issue. It is an I5-14500 CPU. I noticed that the original memory is DIMM and the upgrade kit I bought is UDIMM- will that cause an issue?

@Zabka No issue at all since UDIMM is DIMM. I have also used Crucial and surprisingly found Timetec also works well with our Latitude laptops.
