Optiplex 7010 SFF, added two 4GB ram, no post

Hello All,

I have exactly this same problem. I bought 2 extra 4GB RAM  sticks, and added them in the two vacant slots of my Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF (c. 2014). But, same as for the the original poster,  the pc wouldn't reach 'Power On Self Test' (POST) stage,  it just cycles from powering up to powering down indefinitely until you disconnect the power cable.

If I replace the original RAM sticks with 2 of the 4 new ones the pc boots fine, so the new RAM sticks are compatible with the pc. It's just when I try to go above 8GB ram this problem arises.

The supplier of the new memory sticks (Mr Memory) suggested that if I bought two more of their 4GB RAM sticks (so that all four would be identical) this should solve the problem. But it did not. Even with 4 identical 4GB sticks in the four slots the PC will not boot and it cycles on/off in an endless loop.

Can anyone who knows Dell Optiplex 7010 help please?

The 2x8GB arrived this morning. Installed and ~ten year old Dell Optiplex 7010 boots up no problem!

As noted 4x4GB does not boot.

Many Thanks!

@Jonski89 ya, you should have just bought 2 8gb sticks   ,as they need to be bought at once to ensure compatibility

4x4 is slower that 2×8, it has to travel further, the pc does not support quad channels, so 4 sticks is still running in dual channel mode

@Jonski89 sorry i was replying from my gmail device earlier, but ya,, this has nothing to do will dell, same for all pc,, so 1 spec they don't mention you cant mix,, is single ran sr1 and dual rank sr2 ram,,, single rank ram can tell has chips only on 1 side of ram,so its faster,, dual rank is like going around the track 2 times for same race,,  so you will be upgrading your ram to more for slower,,, find 2 8gb single rank ram used is your best option, also its hard to get a pc to use more than 8gb ram, what are you using it for,, ? unless you use an emulator its hard to use that much ram or open 100 tabs on a browser ,

@Dave9qq Thanks for your answers!  I'm avoiding Windows 11 because is doesn't have the 'quick launch' toolbar which I've been loving more than twenty years. I doubt that not having Windows 'support' will make much difference to me. I bought this Optiplex 7010 reconditioned for not many $ about 6 years ago and it's been a great pc.

The  reason I'm using so much memory is that I have about 30 tabs pinned on Chrome in order to work efficiently.  That takes about 3GB RAM, the rest seems to be taken up by background processes plus Word/Excel and a few other things I run, and totals up to about 90% RAM utilisation.  Then,  when my wife signs in on the same device and doesn't sign out (which she never does) the pc grinds to a halt.

So you're pretty sure that this aging pc will accept the two 8 GB sticks instead?

@Jonski89 you can get the 7010 here for 40 used. Even 100 on Best Buy site in Canada where I am with 8gb ram, sff and tower and for from $180 with 16gb ram installed. But 180 is way to much for old pc,, lol,

@Jonski89 ya Windows 11 stinks. Even my new Windows 11 laptop 2023 model. I had to put Windows 10 on it. 11 so many bugs. Likely 11 will be better by October when 10 end of life hits. And everyone putting 11 on unsupported hardware I laugh. Been there done that. No drivers for 11 on unsupported hardware so you running 10 drivers on 11. It's really bad, hilarious. It's also rumored Microsoft is soon to stop security updates for 11 running on unsupported hardware. Too funny.

@computerdave911  Thanks, but Mr Memory are telling me the 8GB sticks aren't compatible with my 7010, it's 2014 spec,  so maybe that's why - unless you know differently?

@Jonski89 that is they are going by dell site old documentation, i have 2 8s in mine, here YouTube guy put 32gb,, 7010 came with 2 cpu options 2ng or 3rd, if 3rd supports 32gb, ram needs to be same or looking for issues, absolutely nothing to do with 2014 has to do with cpu 2rd or 3rd gen
