M.2 SSD mounting screw question

I know this desktop uses a different screw from that in Dell latitude laptop

what is the thread? Is there an industry standard?  Is it same or different from Optiplex 7040 SFF?
?

7040 SFF M.2 standoff uses M2x3 mm screw

MSI B350 tomahawk motherboard M.2 standoff:

it seems MSI used a non-standard size on this board. The screw included with the SSD (M2x3mm) doesn't fit in the stand-off, the screw seems too big.

I called MSI, they don't carry the part anymore but it's M1.6 instead of M2. That explains it.

Hello @redxps630

The M.2 SSD mounting screw in your desktop looks like a standard #4-40 UNC thread, common for desktops but different from the smaller M2 x 3mm screws often used in Dell Latitude laptops. The Optiplex 7040 SFF typically uses the same type as most desktops, so expect similar threading there. Always double-check size to avoid mismatches!
