OMIVV against standalone hosts or cluster without DRS

We used to use OMIVV 4.x with vSphere 6.0 and had a lot of success with it. We stopped using it when we moved to vSphere 6.7 and have recently decided to use OMIVV again so we deployed OMIVV 5.4. We have 100 standalone T340 hosts at satellite offices that we would like to use OMIVV to update. OMIVV now requires clusters so we went through converting the 100 standalone hosts in to clusters but we have the ESXi ROBO Advanced license that does not include DRS. We have automatic startup/shutdown configured so when we perform maintenance the VMs shutdown and then power on once complete. There does not appear to be a way to run OMIVV against either the standalone hosts or a cluster in our config.

Hi thanks for choosing Dell. I am not quite sure what you’d exactly like to achieve but please have a look here: (page 6 and from page 13)

Hi @DELL-Young E,

I looked over the Proactive HA with Dell EMC OpenManage Integration for VMware vCenter (OMIVV) document that you provided but it seems unrelated to my question.

My question is how do we use OMIVV against standalone hosts. It does not appear to be designed for this in 5.4 and worked previously.

Let us get back to you if the feature you mentioned isn’t available any longer. Please be patient this may take time. Wish you a great weekend.

Stand-alone hosts are supported and DRS is not required for them. (Please see the attached.) Also we recommend you call in so we can review their config and figure out what you did.

IIRC i have seen this problem also with certain version of OMIVV where it was impossible to patch a host within a cluster or perfom an FW upgrade on cluster level because lack of DRS and the wizzard cant move forward.
It was not a problem in earlier version but i must say that i have mind it that i have seen it working recently. Also seen changed behavior when a Host already was in MM. But using OMIVV for more around 10years there was  lot of changed behind the scenes.

@FBBen
take a look to OME which we are using to patch our fleet of ESXi and Non ESXi PowerEdge servers when it comes to FWs.

Regards,
Joerg

Hi @Origin3k, this is exactly what we are seeing. We are on the latest OMIVV release. If we place the hosts in MM in advance it just fails to do anything until we take the host out of MM. We are looking at OME but have already invested in OMIVV and this worked previously.

Hi @DELL-Young E, we engaged support and they are saying that DRS is a software prerequisite for OMIVV.

With standalone hosts there is no way to associate a cluster profile like we could in the post. This means that when running a firmware update job it defaults to the "Dell Default Catalog" repository profile instead of the custom one we have created. Since we have 100 standalone hosts we would have to run 100 firmware update jobs and manually change the repository each time. This is painfully slow and was not required in the past when there was a single repository profile for all servers.

We are wanting a way to put these 100 standalone hosts in to a cluster that would not have DRS enabled or a way to run OMIVV against multiple standalone hosts. We can take care of powering off the VMs and putting the hosts in maintenance mode in advanced since the clusters do not have DRS. We found that even if we put the host in maintenance mode it will still fail to run. Ideally we would just like to stage the update where it just uploads the files to the iDRAC and we reboot but that's only an option when running firmware update against a standalone host.
