iSM and vmware ESXi storage sensor

Hello,

my first thread...

So, I have a Dell PE R730 with iDRAC 8 enterprise license and he run VMware ESXi 7.0 U3g (latest Dell image).

My goal is to make storage sensors visible in ESXi/vSphere, so I will see the status of the perc h730 controller, I know perfectly well that I can see it from iDRAC.

The current status: all sensors give error "Cannot report on the current status of the physical element"

From what I understand I need to install on ESXi the vib module to make iDRAC communicate with ESXi: iSM. On my server driver page there is for ESXi 7.0 U3. Note in the package description: "...on Dell's yx13x or later"

However, when I went to install it, it did not work. I found at this link https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/it-it/000042093/dell-emc-vxrail-ism-non-in-esecuzione-sul-controller-idrac-del-nodo a troubleshooting to fix it but I get this error:

[root@esx1:/opt/dell/srvadmin/iSM/bin] ./Invoke-SupportAssistCollection

Unable to run the command because the SupportAssist Collection feature is not supported on systems earlier than 14th generation.

What? Why? The R730 is 13th generation. I don't understand.

What's wrong?

Hi @marchidaniele,

The article that you referred (https://dell.to/3VYRPnP) was for 14Gen and above servers. The error is pointing that the feature is not supported on systems earlier than 14G. The article also guided you to restart the iSM services, you can probably give it a try.

Have you updated all the server's firmware? iDRAC/LCC and BIOS.

In the hardware health storage sensors, are all the description showing "Cannot report on the current status of the physical element"? I've checked on some VMware forum, users also face the same issue on other server brands, which they did mention its hardware compatibility with ESXi 7.0. Have you tried a lower version ESXi?

Thank you for your replay.

Sorry I didn't write it before, firmware is up to date:

BIOS latest version 2.16.0 and iDRAC 2.83.83.83.

What I don't understand is why it is in the driver list for my server. By the way I have tried all available versions of iSM (4.3.0-4.2.0-4.1.0-3.6.0-3.5.1) all of them give me that error. Yet I would have expected it to work the first time. If both R730 and compatibility with ESXi 7.0 U3 were listed on the driver page someone must have tried/tested it. Or I really am doing something wrong.

I also tried restarting iSM, but it does not solve.

In iDRAC log I view this:

2023-01-04 11_44_02-MainWindow.png

But the data does not show up in ESXi's storage sensor, the port grp (iDRAC Network) and vSwitch (vSwitchiDRACvusb) there are.

I haven't tried with older versions of ESXi.

Would it be possible to solve with a combination of versions between ESXi, iSM, iDRAC, and other?

Regards

Hi, the driver catalog might be needed updating by Dell due to it still being on the list. As I can see you already tried a few troubleshooting steps which came my mind. I dug up a bit but couldn't find a workaround. I found this article Invoke-SupportAssistCollection https://dell.to/3jJHcrn

It also says

  • Access PowerEdge yx4x and later servers.
  • Log in to the operating system with administrator privileges.
  • iSM is running and communicating with iDRAC during tool invocation and execution.
