RAID 5 SAS Manual Disk replacement procedure
Dell T320 server with PERC H710 controller
One RAID 5 virtual total 4 300GB Hot Swappable Drives
Running Windows 2008R2 64 no spare drive defined
Access to server files very slow especially during saving files to a shared directory on the server.
Event log full of SCSI sense errors repeating every couple seconds
OpenManage Administrator: the virtual drive has a green health check mark so as each of the 4 Physical drives.
OpenManage log messages:
SCSI sense key: 3, Sense code 11, Sense qualifier: 0 Physical disk 0:1:2
No full backup for 3 days, manual backups to external devices very slow.
Power down the server
Disconnected Drive #3
Power server on
Drive #3 reporting as missing
Server is running with drive array degraded but in full read/write access speed
Power down server
Insert a new Scsi drive slot #3
Start OenManager server administrator
The new drive #3 state is ready, all other 3 drives state: OnLine
Select Virtual Disk
Disk state: degraded available tasks: delete, assign/un-assign dedicated hot spare, blink/unblink, change policy, "replace member disk"
Server back to normal speed and full backup finally completed.
At this point I am ready to power the server down and reinsert the old drive in slot #3 and attempt to take drive #3 "off line" manually since the drive does not fail.
Is Hot Swap supported on the T320 server with a PERC710 latest firmware updated?
Using best practices what is the correct procedure to replace this member drive
Any help will be greatly appreciated
