iDRAC6 Firmware Upgrade problem - "Device iDRAC6, Application, iDRAC6, failed to access Virtual USB device".
We used to run WIN2003R2 on 2 x R710 and installed WIN2012R2 on both R710 using USB successfully.
Then, we applied ESM_Firmware_2.85 and Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_1.7.5.4 to 1 x R710 with BIOS 1.3.6 successfully.
Then, we failed to apply ESM_Firmware_2.85 to 1 X R710 with BIOS 3.0.0 with the error of "Device iDRAC6, Application, iDRAC6, failed to access Virtual USB device". We didn't apply Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_1.7.5.4 to the R710.
I found from one Google Forum with the same issue:
The nice Dell support guy reckoned it is due to an incompatible BIOS version. I currently have 2.0.22 and the latest version is 2.3.3. So I took his word for it.
I successfully installed the BIOS update which required a reboot. I then had another go at the iDRAC firmware update to 1.66.65 and this time it worked WHOO HOO!!
There are many different BIOS for R710 but I am afraid of trying any BIOS version to both R710.
I have two questions for BIOS.
1 - Can I apply a lower version BIOS (than installed version) to R710? For example, apply BIOS 1.3.6 to R710 with BIOS 3.0.0 installed.
2 - What is the way to restore BIOS installed on R710 if failing to apply a lower or higher or lower version BIOS to R710? For example, fail to apply BIOS 6.3.0 to R710 with BIOS 3.0.0 installed.

John_zxc,
The issue that was holding the update up, was that the version you were at when you ran it wasn't compatible. Meaning that you tried to run the 1.66.65 version from a previous version of the BIOS. Once the BIOS updated then the iDrac update went through, likely due to it needing at least that bios version to proceed. Now with the iDrac Virtual USB issue, if you indeed have the iDrac Express then the Virtual USB isn't going to be an option, as the Virtual Media is allowed only in the iDrac Enterprise.
Lastly, to address the ability to "backflash" your devices. You can do this, but it can cause issues doing so. Could you clarify the reason you would want to backflash the BIOS? If you get the BIOS and Idrac far enough apart you can actually cause the server to stop Post.
Let me know and we can go forward, if needed.

Hi Chris, we didn't try to run the 1.66.65 version from a previous version of the BIOS. But, I found it in a Google forum (just information).
Today, I applied the BIOS 6.3.0 to the R710 and then, the BIOS 6.4.0 to the same R710 with no error.
Then, I applied "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE" but it failed with "Device iDRAC6 application iDRAC6 failed to access Virtual USB device".
Then, I applied "Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_0WFGM_WN64_1.7.5.4_A00.EXE" and it failed with "Execution Status: Update failure. The file copied to the partition did not match the original file".
Fortunately, I don't have any problem in rebooting the R710.
On Dell Open Manager, I do see "BIOS 6.4.0" and Firmware (iDRAC6 is 1.10.0 (build 13) and Lifecycle Controller 0.0.0). Mismatch!!!
We have iDRAC6 express in the R710 and cannot use Virtual USB device as you stated.
From now, What kinds of options can we try to solve the above two issues?
Do you think we can simply ignore the above two issues?
Thanks

Hi Chris, when I press F11 to get into Boot Manager, I used to see Boot with USB on the front panel. I no longer see this and we need to use this.
I applied "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE" but it failed with "Device iDRAC6 application iDRAC6 failed to access Virtual USB device".
I applied "Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_0WFGM_WN64_1.7.5.4_A00.EXE" and it failed with "Execution Status: Update failure. The file copied to the partition did not match the original file".
What is the way we can apply these two to the R710?
Please review this and advise me.
Thanks

Do me a favor and access the BIOS (F2) and under Integrated Devices, verify that User Accessible USB ports is enabled. If not then enable and verify if USB is listed. Also, you may want to quick format the USB and then copy the files down again.

Hi Chris,
User Accessible USB ports has been enabled. I installed WIN2012 R2 to this R710 using USB in front panel last week.
I noticed I didn't insert a USB stick to the USB port in the front panel and complaint no USB shown up in the F11 boot manager. I am sorry for this trouble, I inserted it and could see it in the F11 boot manager .
Thanks

Lets run a Dset to see where the server is on everything, or you could access the Lifecycle Controller and do a platform update off the FTP page to get the proper downloads run. That or you could also run the Server Update Utility (SUU). Those will check and run updates, as needed.
