Idrac initialization warning error after power cut on Poweredge R720 servers.

I have Poweredge R720 servers.  A few weeks ago, our building cut power without notifying us. I now have three  R720 servers that all have the back System ID button at the extreme left flashing amber. The front indicator that normally shows the  service tag of the unit is lit but no service tag # appears.

The fans seem to be running at a higher speed that produces more noise.

When I reboot the servers, I receive an Idrac initialization warning error. "Continuing to boot may yield unexpected power loss due to unknown power inventory and various features lost such as remote access, active power management, thermal management, inventory, lcd or system error reporting".

I then have the option to press the F1 key to continue or F2 to run system setup program. F1 will boot the system into Windows and the OS is OK.  I have tried shutting down the unit, disconnecting the 2 power input cables and holding down the power button and the system ID button at  the front of the unit, reconnecting power and restarting, but this has no effect.

My Bios version is 1.3.6 and is an old version.

My Idrac settings version is 1.00.84.

On the Dell website, for my unit, I see downloads for Bios version 2.5.4.

IDrac Dell Life Cycle Controller V3.3, IDrac with Lifecycle Controller v. 2.41.40.40 and IDrac7  1.66.65.

Which of these should I install and in what order to get my servers back to normal?  Can I install more than one before I reboot?

Finally,  do I risk any damage to my fans in each server by waiting to run these updates?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi,

Will it let you update the firmware? How many servers do you have with the issue? Are they under warranty?

Three R720 servers all have the same problem. They are NOT under warranty. When you say the firmware, do you mean the Bios or the Idrac?

Which firmware should be updated and in what order?

Can I update multiple items before I do a reboot?

Do I risk fan damage by waiting to do the updates?

iDRAC first then the BIOS. You can do multiple updates and then one reboot. Waiting should be fine, the fans running at full speed for a while is fine.

Josh, thanks for the response.  Which Idrac version though?  I have the ones I see listed on the Dell website for my service tag listed as:

(My Idrac settings version is 1.00.84.)

On the Dell website, for my unit, I see downloads for Bios version 2.5.4.

IDrac Dell Life Cycle Controller V3.3, IDrac with Lifecycle Controller v. 2.41.40.40 and IDrac7  1.66.65.

Hi Team,

I have the same problem with my r720:

Warning ! iDRAC initialization error. Continuing to boot may yield unexpected power loss due to unknown Power inventory and various features lost such as Remote Access, Active Power Management, Thermal Management, Inventory, LCD, or System Error Reporting.

Strike F1 to continue, F2 to run system setup program

- If I hit F2, in BIOS option, under iDRAC Setting, I have: "SWC0700: iDRAC is not ready. The configuration values cannot be accessed."

- If I hit F1, the boot sequence continue and complain again about iDRAC "SWC0700: iDRAC is not ready. The configuration values cannot be accessed."
but if I press F1, the real boot continue.

I came across

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-au/000120131/poweredge-idrac-recovery-procedure-with-firmimg-d7

The Bios is something like 2.52 or 2.56

I am not exactly sure which iDrac version I had running.
If I have to guess, I would say something like 2.30.30.30...

I have downloaded all iDrac versions and have extracted firmimg.d7 from all of them, which are:

1.20.20
1.23.23
1.31.30
1.35.35
1.37.35
1.40.40
1.45.45
1.46.45
1.57.57
1.66.65
2.10.10.10
2.15.10.10
2.20.20.20
2.21.21.21
2.30.30.30
2.31.31.30
2.32.31.30
2.40.40.40
2.41.40.40
2.50.50.50
2.52.52.52
2.60.60.60
2.61.60.60
2.63.60.62

Which version should I use on the SD disc?

Thank you
Marco

Hi,

an update:
What caused this, might have been that one power supply was defect, when I tried to do a rebranding

I tried it the image from 2.63.60.62 after replacing the defect powersupply.

there was no LED flashing, that might be the reason why it did not try to boot from the SD card.

I left the server now powered down - and basically be thrown out … :frowning: …

If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

Thanks
Marco
