Help us to list the essential Firmwares & drivers for R710 for WIN2012 R2 and provide us the instruction steps to apply them in conjunction of fresh install of WIN2012 R2.

We have been running WIN2003 R2 on R710 since 2010 and like to do a fresh install of WIN2012 R2 to the R710.  We like to install it using iDRAC6 with the WIN2012 R2 ISO file on WIN7 desktop where iDRAC configuration Utility 1.43 is shown up at boot-up.

.

We downloaded "Dell_Lifecycle_Controller_Integration_3.2.0_for_Configuration_Manager.exe", "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE", "R710_BIOS_4HKX2_WN64_6.4.0.EXE", "SAS-RAID_Firmware_F96NR_WN32_6.3.3-0002_X00(1).EXE" and "OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-WINX64-8.2.0-1739_A00.exe" from Dell support site.

We think we need to run "Dell_Lifecycle_Controller_Integration_3.2.0_for_Configuration_Manager.exe" on WIN2003 R2 32-bit and to login iDRAC, and then, to do a fresh install of WIN2012 R2.

Once WIN2012 R2 is installed, we can apply the other firmware and driver on WIN2012 R2.

Or we need to log in iDRAC 1.43 and to do  a fresh install of WIN2012 R2.

Once WIN2012 R2 is installed, we can apply the other firmware and driver on WIN2012 R2.

Help us to list  the essential Firmwares & drivers for R710 for WIN2012 R2 and provide us the instruction steps to apply them in conjunction of fresh install of WIN2012 R2.

John_zxc,

If the server is equipped with an iDrac Enterprise then you can simply attach the ISO via the Virtual Media to boot to it. Now with Server 2012, majority of the raid controller drivers are native to the OS media, so you wouldn't need to load an external driver. You would simply boot to the OS media and progress with the installation. Now if you happen to have the iDrac Express then you wouldn't be able to use the virtual media function and would need to burn the ISO to USB or disk.

After you install 2012 then you can run the other updates from the OS. If you have any issues doing so then you can try running the SUU (Server Update Utility) located here, to update the server.

Let me know if this helps.

Chris, I thank you for the update.

Unfortunately, we have the iDrac express and I cannot do the ISO via the Virtual Media.I wanted to do it. So, I burned the WIN2012R2 ISO into USB and started the R710 with Boot Mgr (F11). Then, I select USB front and saw "loading ...."  Then, I stopped it by using Power Down.

So, I can install WIN2012 R2 from the USB without using Dell System Mgr CD/DVD.

Now, I like to down load "Dell Systems Management Tools and Documentation DVD ISO, v8.3" and burn it to CD/DVD so that I can start the R710 with this Dell System Management CD/DVD. Then, I assume I can select the USB for WIN2012 R2 installation. The above plan is ok?

I really appreciate of your help.

Thanks

John_zxc,

You can just proceed with installing 2012 from the USB, you don't have to use Dell Systems Mgmt Tools and Documentation (SMTD) to install the OS. All SMTD will add would be to help you configure the raid, and to install a recovery partition when the OS is installed.

Is there a specific reason you wish to use SMTD?

Hi Chris, there is no specific reason for it. I simply used to do it for an old Dell server such as PE 2950. So, I installed Win2012R2 using USB.

I installed "OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-WINX64-8.2.0-1739_A00.exe" on WIN2012R2 where 8.2.0 is not the latest but we use it on R730 now. Then, I applied "SAS-RAID_Firmware_F96NR_WN32_6.3.3-0002_X00(1).EXE". I don't  see any errors on OM-SrvAdmin.

I can see perc 6/i  Firmware 6.3.3-0002, driver version 6.600.21.08, storport driver version 6.3.9600.17383. I assume perc 6/i is ok.

BIOS is 3.0.0 installed. Do I need to apply "R710_BIOS_4HKX2_WN64_6.4.0.EXE"?

iDRAC6 1.10.00 (Build 13). Do I need to apply "Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_0WFGM_WN64_1.7.5.4_A00.EXE" or " Dell_Lifecycle_Controller_Integration_3.2.0_for_Configuration_Manager.exe"?

Do I need to apply "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE"?

I am confused with iDRAC6 and ESM, I don't keep the change for Dell PE server knowledge.

Please review the above and advise me.

John_zxc,

With the BIOS, I suggest you walk the updates up, and not jump to the latest version. This is because if you jump too many updates you can cause issues. You can find the list of BIOS versions here.
I would run every couple updates, until current.

I would suggest running the 1.7.5.4 version of the Lifecycle Controller update, as the other update isn't directed to update the device.

Lastly to clarify the ESM iDrac question. The ESM is the logic the iDrac is based off of. So when an error is showing in the iDrac, it is actually being reported by the ESM itself.

I would sugest you run the ESM update you listed prior.

Let me know how it all goes.

Hi Chris, I have 2 x R710 (sppt, dfax).

For sppt,

-- I applied "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE" from iRAC 1.10 and got an error of "Device iDRAC6, Application, iDRAC6, failed to access Virtual USB device.

-- It has BIOS 3.0.0.

-- I stopped to apply "Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_0WFGM_WN64_1.7.5.4_A00.EXE" from . I will wait for your advice on it.

For dfax,

-- I applied "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE" from iRAC 1.3.0 with no error.

-- I applied  "Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_0WFGM_WN64_1.7.5.4_A00.EXE" with no error.

-- It has BIOS 1.3.6.

-- I am going to apply R710_BIOS_VCNMH_WN32_6.3.0.EXE.

-- But, I am confused with BIOS version.

I can see BIOS 3.0.0 on the above sppt server. Do you think R710_BIOS_VCNMH_WN32_6.3.0.EXE is for BIOS 3.0.0? Perhaps, not. So, what is the exe name for BIOS 3.0.0?

I will wait for your advice on it.

Thanks

Hi Chris, I like to add the following to the previous update additionally.

For sppt R710, I need your help what I need to do now.

I applied "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE" from iRAC 1.10 on sppt R710 and got an error of "Device iDRAC6, Application, iDRAC6, failed to access Virtual USB device".

I applied "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE" from iRAC 1.30 on dfax R710 and got no error.

Can I apply  "ESM_Firmware_CMDN0_WN32_1.95_A00.EXE" on sppt R71 now?   Can I ESM_Firmware can be applied more than 1 time?

Do I need to follow up the instructions below on Remote access, which I found from Google forum?

We have iDRAC express rather than iDRAC enterprise.

Thanks

From   Google forum:

====================

For the following error:

"Failed to access Virtual USB Device" Error  when it tries to update the

DRAC firmware:

Device: iDRAC6

 Application: iDRAC6

Failed to access Virtual USB Device

Solution:

iDRAC access is mandatory for this to work.

Go to the Dell Website and download the iDRAC6 1.95 EXE

(iDRAC6_1.95_A00_FW_IMG - Windows file) and extract it to the windows

computer.

In the extracted folder, there will be a firmimg.d6 file (53MB).

www.dell.com/.../poweredge-r610

Login to the iDRAC and click on Remote Access.

Go to the Update tab in Remote Access.

Upload the "frmimg.dc6" file.

The upload will take a long time.

After the upload, click "Next" to update the firmware.

The DRAC firmware will update successfully.

 Image  Action  Progress

iDRAC6 Firmware Image  Updating...  100% Completed

iDRAC6 Firmware Image has been updated successfully.

The iDRAC6 has been reset. You will not be able to access the iDRAC6 with

this browser session.

Please close and reconnect to the iDRAC6 using new browser session.

Thanks to Dell Support for this suggestion.

Hi Chris, the previous update plus the following additionally.

I applied "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE" from iRAC 1.10 on "suppt R710 box" and got an error of "Device iDRAC6, Application, iDRAC6, failed to access Virtual USB device.

I applied "ESM_Firmware_J7YYK_WN32_2.85_A00.EXE" from iRAC 1.30 on "dfax R710 box" and got no error.  The difference is previous ESM firmware installed previously.

Can I reapply the same ESM firmware to "suppt R710 box" again?

Can I apply "ESM_Firmware_CMDN0_WN32_1.95_A00.EXE" to "suppt R710 box"? I don't have iRAC 1.10 backup. I am not sure if we have iDRAC 1.10 or iDRAC 2.85 now.. Confused.

Please help me.

Thanks

Hi Chris,

For dfax, I took a chance for BIOS. I applied 6.3.0 from 1.3.6 and it worked ok. Then, I applied 6.4.0, which is the recommended version for R710.

For suppt, I opened another forum.

So, I really thank you for the good help. This forum can be closed
