Dell PowerEdge T310
The Server had a RAID5 configuration with three hard drives, The first is a 500GB HDD, the second a 1TB HDD, the third another 500GB HDD. The third hard drive failed. I attempted to replace the failed hard drive with a 1TB but it would not hot swap and start the rebuild process automatically. I set the new HDD as a global spare and the rebuild started with a warning. The rebuild ultimately failed around the 40% mark. I took this as well it is a different manufacturer and ordered a hard drive that was the same model and size as the failed hard drive. So a 500GB HDD shows up and I implement it and again no auto rebuild commences and when setting it as a spare I get the same warning and again the rebuild errors out around the 40% point. Just curious what to do now. This server is set to be phased out by the end of the year but it is a cricitcal server until then and I don't want to run into an issue where another HDD fails and we are stuck rebuilding the entire database.

Rgallagher08,
The first thing I would look at is if the server is out of date, specifically the raid controller and drives, on their driver and firmware. If you let me know what version the server is on BIOS, iDrac, Raid controller and drives I can get you the updates you will need to get the server current.

So even after updating the controller, the drive still doesn't start rebuilding? Do you have anything listed for the drive showing Foreign?

It does start rebuilding, however it errors out at the approx. 40% mark and says failured to rebuild.

It could be possible that the Virtual Disk may contain corruption or a puncture within the data. Now since the server is equipped with a software controller, we are unable to review the specific controller log file that would clarify if it is indeed what is occurring. What you may try is reviewing the backup logs, but this will greatly depend on the tools used to perform the backups. Can you clarify if you are performing a file-level back, or an Image backup?
