Reinstall windows 10 no CD drive

Hello,

For the first time I will purchase a laptop that does not have a CD drive The XPS 13 In the event I need to reinstall windows 10 how is this done?

However, is there some (USB Drive) Dell provides with all the software the computer comes with as they do with new computer that has a CD drive?

Hi Anthony_Masucci,

Thanks for posting.

The XPS13 due to its compact size does not have room for a CD or DVD drive.  If you need to reinstall Windows 10, you would have to use a USB drive.  When you set up your Windows 10, you will need to create the backup media at that time, as there are no CD's or DVD's available with the OS on it.  If you need a CD or DVD drive (to show movies for example) you would have to purchase one that works off the USB port.

As far as I know none of the major computer manufacturers provide any software media as was done in the past.

Regards,
Robert

Dell does not provide the USB with the Windows 10 software.  You will have to create it using your computer.

DVDs have became obsolete and aren't the ideal choice for Windows Installation Media as systems don't have optical drives and optical drives don't pass SecureBoot.

The shipment of physical media has been phased out. For Windows 10 Installation Media is Downloadable from Microsoft and it is also getting updated periodically. Windows 10 is now on its third mainstream build. Having up to date installation media means you get a cleaner install and you need to spend less time dealing with updates. e.g. in the case of Windows 7 SP1 (from 2011) you need to download 5 years worth of updates to bring it up to date.

Microsoft/Dell do not want people using old installation media and so will not ship it with a system anymore. For more details see:
