Questions about my upgrade

Hi all,

I have a Vostro 200 with a E6550 processor, 2GB of RAM, and tried to max out the RAM to 4GB. I bought 2 more sticks of RAM that has the same specs as the original, but the system shows only 3.24GB of physical memory. I was told that background services is using the remainder, or .76GB. Is this correct? I upgraded a very old PC that has a capacity of 1GB, and it shows I have exactly 1GB. I'm confused.

Which Dimension model are you referring Too?

The Vostro 200 will support a 64-bit operating system and E6550 is a 64-bit processor.

All you would need to do is buy and install a 64-bit operating system.

Do you have a 32-bit operating system, or a 64-bit system?

When you have a 32-bit system, this does not recognize 4gb of memory, 3±gb is all a 32-bit system can address.

What it means is, while you can install 4gb of memory in the system, the reason it’s not recognized is mainly due to 32-bit processors and/or 32-bit applications on memory address limitations.

64-bit processors & operating systems will recognize beyond the 32-bit limitation.

Hi Bev. Thanks for replying so quickly to my post. My PC is 32 bit OS. If what you say is so, why does my Dell Dimension show it has 1GB of RAM?
