XPS Desktop connects to home network but not internet

Hi, I have a Dell XPS 8300 desktop and have been having issues with the modem connecting to the wireless network just fine but, I'm not able to access the internet.  This has only occurred over the last 24 hours and is frustrating.  I've read some other recent posts and have gone back and done the System Restore to before the installation of Windows Updates a day or so ago and that has worked twice today.  But I'm not a PC expert and I would like to know how I could resolve this issue permanently without having to undo the updates with System Restore every time I power up and log in.  How do I figure out what setting is being undone to disconnect the internet connection from my XPS 8300?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi tow_73,

Run Windows 7 Network Troubleshooter by following the below mentioned step:

• Right-click the network icon in the notification area of your task bar, and then click Troubleshoot problems.

Check if you are able to get an IP address and Default gateway for wireless card. If yes, ping the Default gateway and the websites. Follow the below mentioned steps to ping the default gateway:

• Click Start – type cmd in the in the search box.

• In the Command Prompt, type "ipconfig" without quotes and press enter.

• Command Prompt will list the Default gateway number which you need to type again and press enter. (If the connection is good it will come up with four replies).

• In the Command Prompt type "ping www.dell.com and press enter. (If the connection is good it will come up with four replies).

If ping is successful and Internet Explorer is unable to open any websites or showing ‘Page cannot be displayed’. Run below MS Fix-It using wired connection.

support.microsoft.com/.../en-us

support.microsoft.com/.../Malware_Prevention

If ping is successful for default gateway, but not for websites - Check in Safe Mode With Networking. (To check in Safe mode: Start the system and hit the F8 key on the Dell logo screen. From the Advance boot menu options, select Safe mode with Networking)

If able to go online in Safe mode with networking, then it’s an issue mostly with firewall. Disable windows and security software firewall and try again.

Update the latest wireless drivers from www.support.dell.com if you are able to access internet using a wired connection.

Please reply with the results.

Thank you for responding Satya but, my issue seems to have resolved itself somehow.  I have not had any issues with internet connectivity since my original post.  From following other threads on this forum, I have McAfee and I think I must have had the same issue that other users were having with the recent McAfee update blocking internet access.

Thanks!

Hi Dell-Satya P

Glad I looked at this forum.....I have a XPS L702x and just started having trouble with my Internet connections......so will do your instructions.....before I call for help!  Wish I had looked 2 days ago.....spent about 6 hours troubleshooting this problem. I did do the cmd prompt already, everything checked out, until the last ping reply....which was negative. Didn't  try the Safe Mode, haven't had to do that in so long forgot about it.   LOL    So it very well might  be the McAfee, too!  Hope I can fix it!

Thank you Satya P.....your advice worked. Got my internet back on my XPS L702x.  Still working on one of the wireless connections that doesn't want to work yet, must still be something with the firewall in McAffee.  :emotion-6:.

Thanks again

Barbara

Hi Todd/Barbara,

Thank you for confirming that the above given information was helpful. There could be several reasons for wireless not working and we need to isolate each point of failure.

Todd,  you are absolutely correct about the McAfee update blocking internet. Please perform these steps to check if this helps:

  • Right click the McAfee icon > Choose Update > Click 'About' and ensure that the DAT version is 6809.
  • Check for Windows malicious software removal tool under "Windows update"
  • Navigation : Control Panel > System and Security >Windows Update > view the list of Updates that are available>
  • Check for Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - August 2012 (KB890830)
  • Right click on it and hide the update > Run all the other available Windows update on the system.

If the issue persists even after performing the above steps, uninstall and reinstall the McAfee software, if registered.

Barbara, ensure the latest wireless drivers are updated for the system that does not have wireless connection and I'm sure everything should be up and running.

Please feel free to reply if  you need any further information.
