WWAN adapter missing - Latitude 7440

I just got a Latitude 7440 with a SIM slot, but I realize I do not have a listing for cellular in my network settings and I cannot find a WWAN in the adapter list under control panel.

I thought once there is a SIM slot the computer should be able to use a sim card.

Which drive do I need to install to solve this issue.

Thanks

You'll have to ask your seller, but the system shipped with the slot regardless of whether there's a WWAN card in the system.  The bigger issue is that if the system did not ship from Dell with the optional WWAN adapter, the antenna leads required will likely not be present -- and in most cases retrofitting a WWAN antenna will require a replacement display assembly with the built in leads.

Your best course of action is to consult with the seller -- and return the system unless they can provide you what you thought you'd purchased.

If the WWAN adapter is missing on a Dell Latitude 7440, there are a few things worth checking before assuming the hardware has failed.

First, confirm whether the system was actually shipped with WWAN hardware installed. Many Latitude 7440 models are “WWAN ready,” meaning they have antennas and SIM support but no cellular card installed. You can verify this in the Dell BIOS or by checking the original system configuration using the service tag on Dell’s support site.

A few troubleshooting steps that usually help:

  • Open Device Manager and check under:
    • Network Adapters
    • Modems
    • Unknown Devices
  • In BIOS:
    • Go to Wireless Settings
    • Make sure WWAN is enabled
  • Install or update:
    • Intel chipset drivers
    • Dell ControlVault drivers
    • WWAN drivers from Dell Support specifically for the Latitude 7440
  • If the adapter still does not appear:
    • Power off completely
    • Disconnect AC power
    • Hold the power button for about 20 seconds
    • Boot again and recheck Device Manager

Also note that Windows Update sometimes replaces the Dell WWAN driver with a generic one, which can cause the device to disappear or fail initialization. Reinstalling the Dell-provided driver package usually fixes that.

If nothing shows in BIOS or Device Manager even after driver installation, the system may not actually contain a WWAN card, or the module could be loose/faulty internally.

@raphina  Thanks for the advise. There is no indication for WWAN in the BIOS.
