Staying connected to Wifi

For some reason Windows 8.1 on my Dell Computer keeps dropping its WiFi connection when I leave the computer for a while.  Its perfectly okay whilst I'm working on it but as I know its best practice to leave the computer running all the time and therefore extend its life, I don't want to keep closing down and rebooting.  Also of course it stops collecting emails which is especially annoying and I have to completely exit Outlook and restart the computer or run through Network diagnostics for it to mend the problem of its own making.  I suspect the computer and Network card is configured to close down automatically but I'm afraid after scouting round the Dell site the only instructions I can find for investigating and correcting WiFi problem with Windows 8.1 appear to be for a completely different operating system.

ajer,

Try these tweaks....

Hit the Windows key and the x keys at the same time, control panel, device manager. Click on Network and then right click on your network adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Go to the power options, and changed the Wireless Adapter Setting, from Maximum Power Setting to Maximum Performance.

Thank you Rick, that's very kind of you.  I have done exactly as you describe and will test a bit later when I leave the computer dormant for a while.  Very much appreciated.

No it hasn't worked I'm afraid.

One doesn't expect to get stupid little problems like this with a bog standard brand new Dell computer which cost an arm and a leg.  I've got better things to do than sit at a computer trying to sort out software problems that should be there, especially a brand new computer.

Tony,

Try channels 1, 6 or 11 in your wireless router, I prefer channel 11.
