Lan Connection

I have an Inspiron 5150. I am having problems connecting to the internet by lan. I can connect using dail up but not by lan. I have changed all the setting in control pannel and every where I could think of. I need some have please.

What are you connecting to physically using your LAN adapter, i.e., what is at the other end of your LAN cable?

I am going to an internet cafe and connecting the lan cable into my laptop lan port. It connects with limited connectivity and I can't sign in to the internet.
