The part number is WX482.  It is a wireless antenna.

Your installation DVD contains only the OS, and any drivers that are native to Windows (included by Microsoft).  Any drivers not included by Microsoft with the Windows OS need to be installed.  Looking at your 435, if you are installing Windows 7, you should not need to install System Software (Dell software that can change the functionality or identification of some of the hardware) or the chipset (neither are listed).  You'll then need video and possibly audio or modem drivers.  If installing Vista, you won't need the System Software (none is listed for this system), but you will need to start with the chipset drivers.

It looks like it could be a wireless ... something ... possibly wireless network, maybe receiver for wireless mouse/keyboard.  What is plugged into it?  What type of connectors does it have?  Is there s sticker or raised lettering on the back with any identifying numbers/codes?

Here are some pics of where it plugs into and what is on the back as far as markings etc.. Thanks for the fast response and hope this helps.

It looks like a hot spot device.

The hot spot thing is what I was thinking too but not 100%. Since it does hook up into the wireless card, I would assume that is is either a hot spot or cheap router device. I cant believe that Dell has no idea what it is and cant look it up. I'm just wondering if when I do a factory restore, if that needs to be plugged in and the drivers loaded for it to set up right. I paid them to reinstall vista home premium sp1 and I think they missed a lot of drivers and the computer hasnt been working right since. They refunded me for it but that didnt get my pc corrected. I want to do another install but the drivers and utilities cd they sent is dated 2009-2010 where as mine that came with the pc is from 2008-2009. Also I use my own router and with this having a wireless card built in, I am not sure if I should disable the router that I hardwire to the pc or the wireless card that came with the computer. I have read a dozen different ways to install it but they all had different steps here and there. One I asked about was if I should install the OS, and then before I start the updates for the pc, install all the driver that are on the cd, and then do the updates for windows. But I am getting off topic. Thanks for the input and I have to make the images someone requested smaller of where it hooks up and what numbers are on the back etc.. and post them in hopes it helps

Thanks a lot for the help and enjoy the evening

I don't see any pictures in your second post ... I'll watch for them to be posted.

There isn't ONE right way to reinstall the OS.  All you really need to know is:

  • Backup important files first
  • Delete all existing partitions when performing a clean install from DVD
  • Install System Software first (when applicable), chipset second
  • Install drivers for any other devices in Device Manager, or available from Dell
  • Get the latest drivers from support.dell.com instead of the drivers CD
  • Only use drivers from Dell

Here are the pictures I meant to send with the other message It plugs into the one with the green light next to it. Sorry about that. So doing a the install using the dvd, are the chipset on the OS disk or no? I thought they were included on the other cd. And I guess finally, after the OS is installed along with the chipset, do I then do all the updates for windows and microsoft last? Or is that what you meant by System Software?

Thanks a ton for all the info and for finding out what that device was. I will be installing Vista sp1. When the agent from dell installed it, she had to get IE9 and sp2 from a separate site it seemed and said she had to do this because it would not be included in the windows updates. I have done a restore on an hp and it updated all those thing through the windows installer so not sure why she did that. So as far as the chipset, I believe it is intel, that can be found on the dell site correct?

SP2 and IE9 "should" be available through Windows Update, so once the drivers are installed, let Windows Update go through until no more updates are available for it.  SP2/IE9 will probably not show up as available updates until other important prerequisite updates have been installed.  If they aren't available through Windows Update, you can download them from the links below:

Vista SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16468

IE9:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-9-details.aspx

Yes, all the drivers you need will be found on Dell's Support Site:

You can also get all the updates for Vista by using WSUS Offline Update:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/wsus-offline-update/

If you need any help with drivers please provide the hardware IDs:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/downloading-drivers-checking-hardware-ids-and-downloading-and-installing-dell-system-drivers-in-the-correct-order/checking-hardware-ids-in-the-device-manager/

Once all the updates are installed and all the drivers are installed be sure to install the latest version of Dell backup and Recovery which will make new factory settings out of your clean install:
