Fresh Xp install on D610. No drivers. can't connect to internet wired or wireless
Bought a laptop that had a fresh re install of Winxp.
Does not show any network adapters.
Under
Device manager/other devices:
?! Ethernet controller
?!Mutltimedia audio controller
?! Network Connector
?! PCI modem
?! PCI simple comm...
?!video controller
?! Video controller VGA comp
I downloaded the driver: Dell Wireless 1350/1450/1370/1470 WLAN MiniPCI Card, Wireless 1350 WLAN PC Card, Wireless (US) WLAN Card, Wireless 1490 Dual-Band WLAN MiniCard, Wireless 1390 WLAN ExpressCard, Wireless 1390/1500/1505 WLAN mini Card Driver
From Dell.com
Copied it to thumb drive, copied it to d: drive and ran install. restarted PC but still doesn't show up. Considered PCMCIA card but Id prefer the wifi
Wasn't really concerned about internet capability at first because this is a dedicated workshop computer but it would be nice to connect to web for repair info and specs without dragging grease thru the house.
EDIT: I have tried to download the complete set of drivers form the Dell support page, but I need to download them on my current machine and transfer them via thumb drive. But system detect keeps popping up as if it wants to detect the pc im using to download

Dell System Detect is useless when you are not using the PC you want to download the drivers for or when your PC cannot connect to the internet.
You should be aware that Windows XP is obsolete and has reached End of Life. You should therefore be extremely cautious connecting an XP system to the internet. This systems hardware is on the weak side and the upgrade to Windows 7 32 Bit isn't worth the cost of the Windows license for this machine. Windows 8.1 32 Bit and 10 32 Bit are likely incompatible due to the video controller.
The first thing I recommend is running the WSUS Offline Update and patching your Windows XP installation to April 2014:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/wsus-offline-update/obtaining-the-latest-service-packsbuilds-of-internet-explorer/patching-windows-xp-fully-using-the-wsus-offline-update/
For drivers if you need more help provide the hardware IDs so we can identify the variants in network controllers and display adapters. See here for more details, the video gives Windows 8.1 then Windows 7 and then Windows XP as examples:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/downloading-drivers-checking-hardware-ids-and-downloading-and-installing-dell-system-drivers-in-the-correct-order/checking-hardware-ids-in-the-device-manager/
For drivers I advise use of the Dell FTP website where drivers are listed as direct download links and there is no forced system detect:
http://downloads.dell.com/published/pages/latitude-d610.html
Its critical that you patch Windows (WSUS Offline Update), install Dell System Software, Intel Chipset first. For this model on Windows XP the Audio driver won't load correctly unless the modem is installed before it:

My legacy Windows XP Reinstallation Guide may help:

I don't have any problems with System Detect. Just don't use it.

OK Thanks! I will try this weekend when I'm not crunched for time.
I understand XP is on life support after the plug is pulled but the diagnostic program and 'dongle' I am using to hook up to car is difficult to say the least and performs best on an older system. Many people have no luck with win7 or 8

You should look to Virtualisation of Windows XP:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/installation-of-windows-and-linux-on-a-virtual-machine-using-vmware-player/
A VM of Windows XP in VMware player opposed to continued use of a falling apart Latitude D610 would be better for you.
The hardest thing about Virtualisation is however obtaining a full retail Windows XP license but you can find full license on eBay. Windows 7 64 Bit had XP Mode but it wasn't a great program for connecting hardware such as a dongle.
In VMware player you can easily attach USB devices to the VM.

DriveTheLife for Network Card is such a special tool developed to help download and install network adapter drivers. It is able to download and install network drivers without network connection from its integrated network card driver pool. After the network drivers installed, you can use the internet normally.
Try it if needed.
