Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook wifi connectivity problem

The laptop was working fine the first few months and then it decided to just suddenly stopped connecting to wifi. I mean it connects to wifi but there's always an exclamation mark on the wifi icon and the connection is always limited or no internet access while everyone else's laptop and my iPad and iPhone have internet access connecting to the same SSID. So I have been using an external wifi card and it was fine. Until 2 weeks ago the external wifi card was having the same problem (limited or no internet access). I googled and followed the suggestion of someone by choosing maximum performance for my wifi and networking cards at the power option. And then it worked again (without using the external wifi card). But now it's back to the old problem.

I have tried updating my drivers, BIOS, and nothing works.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, Avira antivirus (free version).

This is not a windows issue.  I have another Dell with Windows 7 which never looses WiFi connection.  I have 8 other devices (2 Dells, iPad, Android, Nest) which never loose the WiFi connection.  But the Dell Ultrabook has some bad hardware or driver.  I loose connectivity for 1-2 minutes and then recover.    I hope Dell realizes this issue and provide a fix and not send us on a wild goose chase with microsoft.

To be more precise, in the beginning it only sometimes goes into limited or no internet access mode. Sometimes rebooting or just waiting for a bit and the exclamation mark would disappear. And then it became more frequent and finally it just stopped working completely, ie, always an exclamation mark at the wifi icon. Using a cable works fine.

Hi imseen,

I would suggest you to run the Windows Troubleshooter. Right click on the network icon in the taskbar and click ‘Troubleshoot Problems’. Please remove all the wireless profiles and create a new profile. You may refer to the link: http://bit.ly/10dZEFI.

You may completely uninstall the wireless drivers from the device manager and then reinstall the latest drivers from Dell support website. Please paste screenshot of device manager with ‘Network Adapters’ expended.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.

Hi I have the same issue as above - the connection regularly drops out and reconnects. Sometimes it can be for a minute, other times it could be for an hour requiring me to connect to ethernet.

It is a Dell 14z ultrabook running windows 8.1 (problem existed on 8.0 and the update has had no effect).

The video card is as follows:

Intel (R) Centrino (R) Wireless-N 2230

Driver Version 15.10.0.12

Please advise how to resolve the issue?

Regards,

JJ.

Hi JJ,

Please share the exact system model as there are 3 variants under Dell Inspiron 14Z series:

  • Inspiron 14z (1470)
  • Inspiron 14z (N411z)
  • Inspiron 14Z 5423

Drivers for Windows 8.1 are available for Inspiron 14Z 5423 system only. If you are using this system model, then please update the wireless drivers from the link http://dell.to/17YGV2O. Download and update the drivers following the onscreen instructions. Also, make the below listed changes to the wireless card properties and check if it makes any difference:

  • Open Device Manager
  • Expand Network Adapters, right click the wireless card and choose Properties
  • Click the Advanced tab and make the following changes
    • Disable 802.11n Mode
    • Change Ad Hoc Channel 802.11b/g to 6
    • Change Ad Hoc QoS Mode to WMM Enabled
    • Change Mixed Mode Protection to RTS/CTS Enabled
    • Change Roaming Aggressiveness to Highest
    • Change Transmit Power to Highest
  • Click the Power management tab
    • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
  • Open Power Options
    • Click Change plan settings for the selected power profile
    • Click Change advanced power settings
    • Under Wireless Adapter Settings , click Power Saving Mode and change the settings to Maximum Performance
  • Open the router page
    • Change router channel to 6
    • Change CTS Protection Type from CTS Only to RTS_CTS

Hope this helps. Please share the results.
