damaged internet explorer

I have a dimension 4700, with internet connection through the cable company. My problem is that when I try to access the internet via internet explorer the window opens but I get a "The page cannot be displayed" message. I get this message no matter what web site I put in the address bar. I can however access the web if I use the aol icon and sign in that way (using the cable to get there, also I can access my email through outlook I just can't down load the pictures). So the problem is not in the connection itself but with internet explorer. I have contacted aol to see if they could help me fix it. I contacted the cable company and I looked through dell support to see if I could fix it. The cable company said that my internet explorer has been damaged, so I figured if I restored to a date before the damage it would fix it, it didn't. I tried reinstalling with the disk the cable company uses to put internet explorer on and that didn't work either. Please someone tell me how to fix this so we can use internet explorer again. Thank you in advance for any help.

have you tried temporarily disabling your firewall?

I had a similar problem, only with certain web sites.  I was able to fix it with the following:

In Internet Explorer,
Click on Tools
Click on Internet Options
Delete Cookies, Files, and History
Close Internet Explorer

If that doesn't work, try going back to the Internet Options,
Click on Connections,
Click on LAN Settings,
Click Automatically Detect Settings
Close Internet Explorer

Thank you mm0000 for your input. I tried both of your suggestions and I'm still getting the same message. Anymore thoughts on what else I can do to fix it?

Try this

This maybe of some help, Click on Start,Programs then
on accessories then on Command Prompt ,Just type in sfc
in the Command Prompt display and press emter on the key board
Then after that comes up with the information type in sfc/scannow
and press enter again, let it check your files for errors.
It will correct any files for you
