Hi astroidinaryg,

Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum.

To use Wi-Fi on your desktop system you would need a wireless card to be installed or you can also purchase USB Wi-Fi adapter. You can refer this link http://dell.to/1LtgCpJ for Wi-Fi adapters.

Please reply if you have any further questions.

Have a great day ahead.

So does it matter which wifi USB adapter i get? Or no. If so which one do you recommend considering my computers really old I'd like to update it.

Hi astroidinaryg,

Please check the Tech Specs for the Software/System Requirements and the OS required for the compatibility with Windows XP. Go for the USB 3.0 only if there is a port on the system, otherwise USB 2.0 should be fine too. You may also check the Data Transfer Rate.

Please reply if you have any further questions.

Hi astroidinaryg,

An internal network adapter is installed inside a computer’s desktop tower. It has an Ethernet port meant to fit an Ethernet cable through which the data it transmitted.  A Wi-Fi network adapter connects to a radio-based computer network rather than a wire-based Ethernet cable to transmit data. You have an internal wireless adapter that needs to installed inside a computer’s desktop tower or you can use an USB Wi-Fi network adapter, which can be connected externally on one of the USB ports on the system.

Hi tiffanymjp,

Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum.

The Wi-Fi indicator light off means:

  • The printer is turned off or is powering up
  • The printer is not connected to a wireless network and is in Power Saver mode. In Power Saver mode, the power light pulses on and off.

You can download the Windows 8 32 bit driver using this link http://dell.to/1HLwpm3 and for Windows 8 64 bit driver using this link http://dell.to/1AtUYBp.
