Call Waiting?
There are many programs that came on my Dimension 4400 desktop. I noticed today under html, under Phone Tools, some templates or something, for setting up an answering machine?
Is there a way to know of incoming telephone calls, while I'm online(dialup), that is already on my computer?
I have Windows XP Home Edition;
Modem: Conexant HSF V92 56K Data Fax PCI Modem (COM3)

If your modem is V.92 (I don't know what they put in the 4400's, but you can check modem properties to see, or if you find Modem on Hold software, it is safe to assume Dell would not have put it there without a V.92 modem), you may be able to use Modem on Hold.
You need all the following to use it:
1.) V. 92 modem
2.) A V.92 Internet Service Provider, with a V. 92 connection. Many ISPs have several #'s, and not all are V. 92. Also, I have heard of a v.92 modem and v.92 dial up # actually negotiating a v. 90 connection.
3.) The ISP must specifically support Modem on Hold - several (like AOL and MSN) offer V. 92 connections, but do not allow Modem on Hold (takes up their bandwidth while you're talking to someone and not using ISP)
4.) Call waiting (and it must NOT be disabled in the dial up process)
Note that the ISP determines how long you can talk before being disconnected. I have heard that some allow up to 20 minutes, but have not verified that. My ISP (NetZero) just changed from allowing four minutes to allowing six minutes of talk time before ending dial up connection.

You have a new modem that comes with Modem on hold (MOH) go to search on your
computer and search for Modem on hold. This modem alows you to take phone calls
while online for up to 3 min, with out disconnecting you from the internet, if you talk longer
than that then you will loose your connection, but you can always refresh when you get back
online. I do not have this feature yet, but will be upgrading from my v-90 to a v 92.
Another tidbit you have to have call waiting from your phone company and your
isp also has to support your v-92 modem. I suggest playing around with it and seeing
what you got then contact your isp and phone company about the callwaiting and compatibility.
Hope this helps~~!

thank you mcsimons and hrova. No, I don't think my ISP supports Modum on Hold. Thank you for your very good explanations. Very helpful.
