Bluetooth speaker pairs with Inspiron 3647 but doesn't show up as a playback device

I recently purchased a Braven BRV-X bluetooth speaker, and it works very nicely with my smartphone. I am now trying to get it to work with my Dell Inspiron 3647 computer, however, after getting it paired, it doesn't show up as a Playback Device, and I can't get computer music to play on it.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 3647 desktop running Windows 8.1 and Dell Wireless 1705 Bluetooth. I'm pretty sure it's a Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter.

When I go to Devices and Printers, it shows the Braven BRV-X as being installed and paired, however when I start the bluetooth speaker, it doesn't show up on my computer as a playback device.

Any help you can provide will be deeply appreciated.

I had already found and tried that procedure, which didn't work.  However, I finally managed to get it to work! I checked the Dell support website for my computer, and installed the Dell recommended updates to the Dell 1705 Bluetooth driver and the Dell Unified Wireless Suite.  This allowed the Braven BRV-X installation procedure to fully install it as a Bluetooth Device, and also as a Playback Device. Once the speaker is installed, I use the following procedure to make the speaker play with the computer:

1. Stop all applications that produce sound (Firefox, DVD player, etc.)

2. Turn on the Braven BRV-X speaker and wait until computer says Bluetooth Connection Successful

3. Click Start / Devices and Printers (wait for it to list all installed devices)

4. Right-click Braven BRV-X; click Advanced Operations; and click Connect to audio sink device.

5. Right-click the speaker icon in bottom taskbar and select Open Volume Mixer

6. Under Device, click the down arrow to right of Speakers and click to select Bluetooth Audio Device

7. Set the volume at 50%, and “X” out of the Volume Mixer

8. Right-click the speaker icon in bottom taskbar and select Playback Devices

9. Click Bluetooth Audio Device / Set Default / OK

10. Start audio program (Firefox/Pandora; DVD; etc)

11. All computer sound will now come through the Braven BRV-X speaker

When done using the Bravarn BRV-X Bluetooth speaker:

1. Turn off the Braven BVR-X speaker

2. Computer speakers will automatically be selected as default

Thanks for all your help!  Now I can use it with my smartphone AND my computer!!!

Hi,

You may want to check out this thread on Bluetooth headphones that one of my co-workers helped a customer resolve a similar problem.  Whether the bluetooth component is headphones or speakers the basic issue is the same.

Try the suggestions in that thread and let us know if it helps.
