"unlock third-party transceiver" doesn't work on os10 10.5.5.3, license question
Hi!
Got used S4112f-on and it doesn't work with Mellanox Cable - the switch says "serial number:MT1841VS05210 is third party and is disabled". I tried to use solution from this article https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-uk/000213540/dell-qsfp28-transceiver-q28-128gfc-sw4-part-number-kp0vm-fibre-channel-sw4-transceiver-might-display-as-a-100gbase-sr4-with-qualified-field-as-false-and-link-not-coming-up?lwp=rt
put
configure terminal(config)# allow unsupported-transceiver(config)# unlock third-party transceiver(config)# end# write
but it didn't work - although the commands exist in config, I got the same error about third party and disabled interface.
As my switch is used I don't have access to DDL but I managed to get os10 10.5.4 and want to downgrade to it to see if the above solution is going to work, but I don't know if the license backup file .lic from 10.5.5 will work with 10.5.4.
Will be very grateful for any advice.
Cheers

Hi,
Yes, it should work.
But the issue sounds like an unsupported cable, but try downgrading the OS and try.

it didn't work. I tried os10 10.5.5.3, 10.5.4.7.204, 10.5.3.6.157 with similar config
OS10# show running-configuration
! Version 10.5.3.6
! Last configuration change at Oct 27 21:35:13 2023
!
ip vrf default
!
iscsi enable
iscsi target port 860
iscsi target port 3260
allow unsupported-transceiver
unlock third-party transceiver
interface breakout 1/1/13 map 100g-1x
interface breakout 1/1/14 map 100g-1x
interface breakout 1/1/15 map 100g-1x
....
______
tried different cables: mellanox, dac cisco original, some Chinese cisco compatible, but always the same result - when I plug the cable I get: is third party and is disabled.
The license stays ok while I downgrade the firmware, but I've lost of hope.
Cheers

Hi,
It turned out ok. I've started to set the speed of the ports manually and now it works alright. Thank you for you help.
Cheers.

Hi,
been playing with the switch for a while and there is a strange thing. When I attach a 1gb copper transceiver to the 10gb port it doesn't work until I set "speed 1000", but when I set that option, the port is always up, even without cable attached to it. Meanwhile, while I plug the cable from transceiver to computer, the latest shows no connection and it helps only to disable and then to enable the network adapter. Maybe someone have any idea how to fix this.
Cheers.

Hi,
Like I said, the switch is used and I don't have access to the latest firmware, but what I have is 10.5.5.3.56 and it is not that old. Nevertheless, point's taken, I am going to look for the latest.
Cheers.

Hello,
I got into this post searching about the same problem. No matter what I do, even forcing the speed to be fixed to 25G on both ends or even fixing FEC to FEC74, I have no way to get the links up. Is there anything else I can do besides upgrading?
Switch model is: S5224F-ON
Version build: 10.5.5.5.105
Transceiver type: SFP-H25GB-CU2M
Transceiver brand: FS
Transceiver PN: S28-PC02
Thank you in advance.

Hello,
Yeah, this is a pretty common issue when you're using third-party DACs like the FS ones with Dell switches. Dell tends to be pretty strict with their firmware and transceiver validation policies.
Even though you’ve already tried forcing the speed to 25G and setting FEC to FEC74 (which are the right steps), it won’t help much if the switch doesn’t recognize the DAC at the hardware level. Dell only guarantees compatibility with their certified optics and DACs, so anything else can be hit or miss.
You might want to check if your switch allows disabling transceiver validation. Some OS10 versions let you do that with

Hello,
Appreciate your quick response. Unfortunately, the command did not work at interface or global mode. Do you think downgrading/upgrading would allow that command?

@jandepora actually, there is no guarantee, but it is worth a try.
