S5248F-ON QSFP-DD ports: 200G or 2x100G?

I'm trying to determine authoritatively what's the fastest speed configuration on the QSFP-DD ports on the S5248F-ON.

The installation guide says:

Table 5. QSFP-DD port LEDs—S5248F-ON

LED Description

Link/Activity LED—200GbE, 100GbE, 40GbE, or 10GbE mode

First LED:

  • ●  Off—No link/activity

  • ●  Solid green—Port link operating at maximum speed, 200G

  • ●  Flashing green—Port activity operating at maximum speed, 200G

Link/Activity LED—2x100G mode

First and fifth LEDs:

  • ●  Off—No link/activity

  • ●  Solid green—Port link operating 2x100G

  • ●  Flashing yellow—Port activity at 2x100G port

  • ●  Flashing yellow, 1 second on/off—Port beacon

However, the SmartFabric guide says:

Table 25. Port groups and breakout modes on the S5248F-ON switch

Port Group Ports Supported breakout modes

Port-group1/1/13

49, 50

● 100g-2x ● 50g-4x ● 40g-2x ● 25g-8x ● 10g-8x

On the switch itself, checking the port-group's options:

OS10(conf-pg-1/1/13)# mode eth

  100g-2x  Breakout to 2 100G interfaces

  50g-4x   Breakout to 4 50G interfaces

  40g-2x   Breakout to 2 40G interfaces

  10g-8x   Breakout to 8 10G interfaces

  25g-8x   Breakout to 8 25G interfaces

So, no 200G mode.  Also the S5200 datasheet only mentions 100G ports and none faster.

Seems like only switches with QSFP56-DD  ports can do 200G, and the DD ports on the S5248F are QSFP28-DD?  (Doesn't help that often, including in Dell documentation, the exact type is omitted and those ports are described only as "QSFP-DD".)

I think that QSFP56 supports PAM4 signaling and QSFP28 doesn't.

Not a dealbreaker since I'll be using those ports for VLTi, but it's confusing/inconsistent.

Hi,

It looks like there's some confusion due to the different documentation sources. I know, it's frustrating when things don't add up. But the switch you've got, the S5248F-ON, has QSFP28-DD ports, which are limited to 100G speeds. The indicators on the switch might be showing 200G speeds, but that's just an error or a mistake in the documentation.

You're right, the S5200 datasheet only mentions 100G ports, and the SmartFabric guide shows the same thing.

If you want to get more advanced information or clarify any doubts, you can always reach out to your local Dell network team. I've got the same documents you do, and I've double-checked the info.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! Perhaps you can file a request to correct the error.

While we're on the topic, can the S5248F-ON take 1Gb on any of its front ports (not the management port..)? I also found confusing information on that.
