S4048-ON died after firmware update

A bought a S4048-ON from ebay and after a firmware update I get the errors below.

I have seen that a similar issue on a S3048 was resolved, but the post does not explain the procedure or where to get the correct Bios or flash tools from. see https://www.dell.com/community/Networking-General/S3048-ON-died-after-a-shutdown-and-reboot/td-p/8055627

Error: Could not open file `/dev/i2c-1': No such device
Notice: Invalid TLV header found. Using default contents.
Notice: Invalid TLV checksum found. Using default contents.
ONIE: Unable to find 'Base MAC Address' TLV in EEPROM data.

Can anyone assist ?

Thanks

Hi, sorry to hear that. It could be corrupted ONIE image or a failed chip. I tried to help you with reinstalling ONIE image. If this works it'll overwrite the existing ONIE from accessing the chip. I hope it will fix the errors and corruption. But if didn't work please contact your local Dell network team they will checking with you troubleshooting steps.

  • Download the latest ONIE image Dell Networking S4048-ON ONIE v3.21.1.0-6 | Driver Details | Dell US
  • Format a USB flash drive with FAT32 file system and copy the ONIE image file to the root directory of the USB flash drive.
  • Connect the USB flash drive to the USB port on the front panel of your switch.
  • Connect a console cable to the console port on the front panel of your switch and open a terminal emulator on your computer with the following settings: 115200 baud rate, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
  • Power on your switch and press any key when prompted to enter the ONIE boot menu.
  • Select option 2: Rescue Mode and press Enter.
  • Wait for the ONIE rescue mode to load and then type onie-self-update /mnt/usb/onie-recovery-x86_64-dell_s4048_on-r0.bin (replace the file name with the actual name of your ONIE image file) and press Enter. This will start the installation process of the new ONIE image.
  • Wait for the installation process to complete and then reboot your switch by typing reboot and pressing Enter.

To reinstall the ONIE image using a network boot server, you will need to:

  • Download the latest ONIE image
  • Set up a network boot server on your computer or another device that can host files over HTTP or TFTP protocols. You can use software such as [Apache HTTP Server] or [tftpd32] for this purpose.
  • Copy the ONIE image file to the directory that is accessible by your network boot server.
  • Connect your switch to the same network as your network boot server using an Ethernet cable.
  • Wait for the ONIE rescue mode to load and then type onie-self-update http:/// or onie-self-update tftp:/// (replace with the actual IP address of your network boot server and with the actual name of your ONIE image file) and press Enter. This will start the installation process of the new ONIE image.
  • Wait for the installation process to complete and then reboot your switch by typing reboot and pressing Enter.

Hi  ErmanO,

Thanks for the feedback, I will give the first option a try, although I think I have already tried this.

I will not be able to do the Network Boot server version, as for some reason, the failed previous upgrade has affected the Management network interface, which is no longer available. It doesn't Even show up in the bios.

I will post again with the results, but it may not be until later next week.

Thanks Trev
