S4048-ON Adding New Unit to Existing Stack

Hi there,

I hope you're well.

One of our S4048-ON switch has failed, we have a replacement and I need to get this added to the stack. Could anyone please advise whether or not the unit being added to the stack must have the same OS version to the master unit or whether that device is capable of downloading and installing from the master unit?

Can you please advise also whether the below steps are correct? If I manually assign the stack ID, power off the switch and connect the stack cables to the master unit will it boot and join the stack without rebooting the stack? All advise would be greatly appreciated.

Manually Assigning a New Unit to an Existing Stack:

To manually assign a new unit a position in an existing stack, use the following steps.

1. On the stack, determine the next available stack-unit number, and the management priority of the management unit.

EXEC Privilege mode
show system brief or show system stack-unit

2. On the new unit, number it the next available stack-unit number.

EXEC Privilege mode
stack-unit stack-unit-number renumber stack-unit-new-number

3. (OPTIONAL) On the new unit, assign a management priority based on whether you want the new unit to be the stack manager.

CONFIGURATION mode
stack-unit stack-unit-number priority priority-number

4. Assign a stack group to each unit.
CONFIGURATION mode

stack-unitstack-unit-number stack-group stack-group-number

5.Connect the new unit to the stack using stacking cables.

Dan.

Daniel,

You would need to update the replacement switch to the same versions, change the relevant ports to stack mode, then power it down and connect the stack cables. So your steps are correct, and there's no need to reboot the Master or the existing Stack.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi Chris,

Thanks so much for that, how do I go about setting the ports to "stack mode" is that via the stack-group command?

Many thanks,

Dan.

Heya Daniel,

I would refer to the configuration guide linked below. This directs straight to the section on configuring a new stack and I believe should provide most clarity. If you have a backup config file available, you could also consider importing it.

Hi there,

Thanks for that, it's version Version 9.11(0.0P8) I need.

I need this as it's currently the version running on the master switch, once I've got that switch added to the stack I will upgrade to a later version. It was a client environment we have taken over so updates are needed.

Do you know where I can find OS9 firmware?

Regards,

Dan.

That's great, thanks so much for that.

May I also ask, if I'm going to use the CLI to perform the upgrade would I just need to opt for the FTOS-SK-9.11.0.0P8.bin or the ONIE-FTOS-SK-9.11.0.0P8.zip?

The "ONIE" states it's the installer file which I'm not sure what that is so if I just copy the .bin file via USB or FTP I should be able to apply that as the boot image and install it that way. I'll need to look into what the "installer" option is as at present I do not know.

Thanks again.

Thanks for that, is there any difference between individual .bin file and the "installer" option. I'm assuming the installer option is the ONIE, is there any pre-requisite software I need to have installed on the switch or is it as easy as uploading the file and the switch will do the rest?

At present, I don't understand the difference between the two different file options.

I think it will be more easy, if you can use ".bin" file with ONIE
Dell Networking S4048: Example ONIE OS Install (Video)  https://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/rc957125/videos~en/documents~esupport-s4048exampleosinstall-en-v1.aspx

Also you can check pg13(this document is very useful) https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/onie-quick-start-guide.pdf

*I recommend that you back up your startup configuration and any important files and directories to external media prior to upgrading the system. Be ensure you still have your warranty in case you run into any issues.

Hello @Daniel Vibert,

You just need the file named: onie-installer-x86_64-dellemc_s4100_c2338-r0 (this may slight change, but will be alike). That's the automatic (zero-touch) install.

No, there are no special considerations than the ones mentioned in the install guide here: https://dell.to/2TKmSJX
