PowerConnect 2724 won't respond

Yes, I know this device is old. But it generally works for me. Now I want to check its configuration (and maybe change things) and I can't get access. I've successfully placed it in "managed" mode but it does not respond to the default address, 192.168.2.1. Strangely enough, it does respond enough to NMAP that NMAP thinks it is up. But it won't respond to ping and NMAP says all TCP and UDP ports are not responsive:

# nmap -sT 192.168.2.0/24
Starting Nmap 7.92 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2025-03-19 15:38 PDT
Nmap scan report for 192.168.2.1
Host is up (0.0062s latency).
All 1000 scanned ports on 192.168.2.1 are in ignored states.
Not shown: 1000 filtered tcp ports (no-response)
MAC Address: 00:1E:22:83:37:F7 (Arvoo Imaging Products BV)

Nmap done: 256 IP addresses (1 host up) scanned in 23.05 seconds

Hi,

Just to confirm, you are trying to SSH to the switch or try to access the GUI? For this switch, it has GUI access only to check on the configuration. You mentioned that the switch is working for you, as in it is doing the switch routing? You are able to ping the switch? Have you tried rebooting the switch?

@DELL-Joey C I can't ping the switch. NMAP says the switch is up but it doesn't use a normal ping. And as all ports are non-responsive, I can't get to the web interface. I know the switch does not use SSH and I haven't tried. Switching is working but I have no control or monitor capability. What is perplexing is that I get no response on 192.168.2.1 even though the switch is in "managed" mode.

Just FYI, an NMAP "ping" consists of "an ICMP echo request, TCP SYN to port 443, TCP ACK to port 80, and an ICMP timestamp request". Clearly in my case, the additional requests indicate the switch is up even though ICMP echo doesn't get an answer.

Hello,

Can you see if this works for you? It's a similar issue:

which basically says "connect to any port of the switch having manually configured an IP address of say 192.168.2.2 on my laptop"

And maybe try a different browser.

NMAP is *not* a browser and does not maintain any cache. All ports on 192.168.2.1 do not respond. This implies that *any* browser will not be able to connect. Indeed, I've tried four of them: Firefox, Chrome, Waterfox, and PaleMoon. Chrome treats the attempt as a search, the others report that the address does not respond. -- And BTW, I know how to establish a route to the 192.168.2.0/24 subnet and I've done so.

Hi,

You mentioned you can't ping the switch, but switching is working? - That means you can ping other devices connected to the switch?

Alright, so in this case, if you can access the switch management after you have restarted the switch, there isn't any other way to access GUI management of the switch other than to reset the switch.

@DELL-Joey C Yes, I can access all the devices attached to the switch. As I understand the documentation, resetting the switch is done by changing from unmanaged to managed mode. I have done that several times without any change to the situation I've described. Is there some other way to force a reset?

Is the default address accessible through any or all of the 24 ports or is it somehow tied to just one of them. I've been testing using the device attached to port 1.

Hi,

I don't have a PC2724 to test the reset, but I recall that will have to press and hold the managed button for least 7 seconds. You probably can try hold longer, maybe 10 secs to check if it can reset.

Default is 192.168.2.1 which you are currently using, and it's Port 1.

Thanks for the help. But I guess this switch is no longer working as documented. I held the button for about 15s, until all the port lights went out. On release, the lights came back on and the managed light slowly flashed for about 30s before going steady. The manual says this indicated self-test in progress. But the switch still does not open any ports though it does respond enough to NMAP (as reported earlier) that it appears to be on the network.
