Dell R740 can't link with Marvell switch at 1G
Test Setup #1: Dell R740 <--Fiber cable--> COTS Media Converter 1 <--RJ45--> COTS Media Converter 2 <--Fiber cable--> Marvell eval board -----> That worked and linked.
Test Setup #2: Dell R740 <--Fiber cable--> Marvell eval board -----> That not worked and not linked.
Our goal is making test setup #2 able to work and link.
We provided there have something get wrong on the R470. We want to make SFP slot forced to 1G or disable auto negotiation.
- Is R740 able to fixed at 1G or does it auto-negotiate 100MB/1G on fiber side?
- If auto, can it be fixed to 1G on fiber side?
- Is there an option to enable LLR on Dell R740? If so, how?
I appreciate the help. You guys clearly know more about this protocol/interface and I’m hopeful you will help us isolate the issue and resolve it.
Thanks,

Hi,
3 of your question ain't related to the server, the feature configuration all depend on the fiber card, SFP module and OS capability. Can you let us know the card DPN#, is it a Dell certified card? What SFP are you using. LLR is a game mode, usually it is not available in Dell card, but I might be wrong, let us know the card that you're using, I'll check.

Hi Joey,
Thank you for the support. the fiber card we installed in the R740 which is Intel X710-BM2. And the SFP module is TP-Link TL-SM311LM.
Again, we want the test setup #2 be able to link and work. we believe that we need the server to locked on 1G.
Thank you,

Hi, if there is no problem with SFP compatibility, I would expect it to work. You can control changing the speed by selecting F2 system setup, then device settings, and from there in the network card settings.

JJ_99,
Would you confirm what you are seeing, does it allow you to set a specific speed?
Also is the server and card update to current?

Hello Chris,
The R740 server is windows server 2012 R2, and the card driver is Intel 1.16.202.0. it is allow to set to 1G Full Duplex. But it is not able to disable auto-negotiation. I believe the issue right now, which is I need to update the Server to 2023 and update the card to current. the question is how to update the R740 Server to 2023?
Thank you,

I am not cerain what you mean by updating to 2023, would you clarify that. Also, would you confirm what the speed is set to on the device you are connecting to, as that may be dictating the options you can select?

Hello Chris,
It is my fault. i mean update the Server system from 2012 R2 to 2022. the speed is set to 1G on the device. You can see the test setup above, it is work if it is include the COTS media converter. however, our goal is get rid if COTS media converter.
Thank you,

Well, if your intention is to upgrade to Server 2022 then I would start there, then try the configuration after that is completed. In order to upgrade you would need the Server 2022 OS media and then either mount the ISO via Virtual Media in the iDrac, depending on license, , or possibly a USB key. When you start that ISO you should see an upgrade option and you can proceed from there.

Hey Chris,
we updated the Dell R740 server to Windows Server 2022 and updated the Intel X710-BM2 Fiber network card to current. we tried to test the test setup below.
Test Setup #2: Dell R740 Server with Intel X710 network card <--Fiber cable--> Marvell 88E6390X eval board -----> That not worked and not linked.
It still got link failed. we checked the network card configuration in system setup, we found the auto-negotiation are not able to disable. (see below attached pic) It looks like X710 network card didn't disable auto-negotiation when choosing a specific speed and duplex setting.
So my question is:
1. Do you have any idea how to disable auto-negotiation when choosing a specific speed and duplex setting.?
2. Do you have any recommendation for the 10G Fiber Network card which be able to disable the auto-negotiation.
Thank you,
DELL-Chris H

It is my understanding that Auto-negotiation is disabled by selecting a discrete speed and duplex mode in the adapter properties sheet. So although its showing in the BIOS, the OS should dictate it.
