Dell R720xd (NIC team) shows Unidentified Network when connected with Powerconnect 5324

Hi

I have a PowerEdge R720xd configured with an NIC team (2 ports, Switch Independant, Dynamic, All adapters Active) and configured with fixed IP, Gateway, DNS.

Connecting this device to my TP Link switch and after starting up its shows "Network Internet Access" (Private Network).

Connecting this device to my Dell PowerConnect 5324 (default config) it shows, after starting up, "Unidentified Network" (Private Network). Funny thing... after opening services.msc and restarting Network Location Awareness it recognizes the default Network.

Any idea where to look for?

Hi Josh,

After testing with a 10$ TP link 5p Hub I found my Network running normally after startup. So my coclusion... It must be the Powerconnect. I enabled Global RSTP (I choose Multi STP) and for every port (g1-gn) that connects to normal device I enabled STP and Fast Link.

Now my server is directly connecting to Network - Internet access instead of "Unidentified Network"

Hi,

Are both switches connected to the same network? I would assume that the tplink is a lot newer and might be passing more network information.

TPLink is 3/4 years old and the PowerConnect more then 10 years but should that make a difference?

They are both connected to the same netwerk phisically and also on IP 192.168.1.x/24 en VLAN 1. My switches, servers etc. all have fixed IP only PC's, laptops etc have DHCP from a free range. I changed my setup and isolated my Dell and PowerConnect on my desk. One networkcable attached to Powerconnect and one cable to the Dell R720. Still Unidentified network. When I change/refresh th NIC team or restart NLA service the network is recognized correctly.

Checked also the latest firmware 1.0.2.0.2

I'm running WIndows Server 2019 (latest patches installed). When I connect my Servers to my other TP Link SG108 I don't have any troubles. Only behind my Dell switch they don't startup correctly. After retsrat NLA, Enale/Disable NIC or even unplug/plug a NIC it re-connects to the proper Network.

I don't have any issues with my connected APC UPS (both interfaces Switch and UPS are connectable via https interface in Chrome)

I looked into the Windows Event viewer. I can't find errors that are related. Even after a fresh install there are already a lot of errors to be fixed but that is another topic :-). But ... I will investigate some more. Keep you updated on this one

Hi,

Did some more tests this evening. No errors in the logs that gives a clue. I found an article about configureing Dell Power Connect (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000120161/how-to-manage-rapid-spanning-tree-rstp-thru-command-line-on-dell-networking-powerconnect-switches#:~:text=console(config)%23%20spanning%2Dtree%20portfast,another%20switch%20or%20network%20device.)

It was describing: It is recommended to configure any edge ports, ports that go to end devices such as printers, phones, servers, workstations, to be set up as Portfast. A port in Portfast will move directly to forwarding state when the link comes up without going through listening or learning states.

Do not configure portfast on interfaces that attach to another switch or network device.

In my case the PowerConnect (port 23/24) is connected to the TP-Link (2 ports 1Gb simultaniously) . Server 1 ( 4 ports 1 to 4) and Server 2 connected to ports 9-11.

Should I configere all server ports as Portfast and set the 2 uplinks to the TP-Link to default RSTP mode?

Yes, that could help and at the very least is the recommended port configuration.
