Networker device on Centera?
Hi Community,
We are using Networker 8.2.2 with Data Domain and It Works Great!
Now we would like to use our Centera Storage for backing up long term backup (lets say Archiving, even it's not completely right)
Our Centera Storage is accessible through EAS Gateway Application from Storfirst.
This one provide us a Windows Disk on a Windows Server. Datas who are writed to that disk will be writed on the Centera.
From Centera perspective, it seem not to be a problem to achieve that. However, Networker should accept a Device where he can only write and not delete Datas.
Has anyone experienced these kind of configuration? Does it work? Is there any recommandation?
Thanks in advance for any suggestion.
Cheers
Greg

So, you want to make archive of archive? Makes less sense. If you don't want to use centera, simply archive data with NW. Centera->anywhere else simply doesn't make sense as it is meant to be final landing space for archives.

That doesn't make sense. Centera is archiving target (certified according to some rather restrictive compliances) so why make a backup of archive? If you want two copies, you would use second centera. On the other hand, if you want to use Centera as disk target, that would be an issue at certain point because:
a) there is API connection between Centera and NW - so how do you pass retention
b) cleanup of disk device would not work
So, I would just forget about it.

Thanks for the quick answer.
The goal is not to backing up the centera but to do an archive on the centera.
We want to use Networker to schedule the copy of file into centera. and to have an index of what file have been copied into centera.
Retention will be infinite, so no clean up.
Did you keep your advice?

An EMC Centera is a "CAS device" where the files' data will usually be exchanged between the application and the Centera by the Centera API. If the application does not support this API, you need to use a Centera CUA as gateway in between.
Neither does NW itself support the Centera API nor do Centera or CUA support the NW client/storage node software which would be essential in this case. And of course it is not said the Centera/CUA would support any file sizes/dir trees.
So if you want to archive the backup data, use a tape and store it offsite in an appropriate place. And do not forget to "refresh" the information every # number of years to ensure readbility.
