Networker backup clonning.
Hi All,
I am new to Networker software. Recently I am maintaining it. As i am new in this, I have a query on backup and cloning.
1. We are taking File system backup over IP to the data domain box (client is a VMWare guest). Then we clone the backup from the Data domain to the ML3 Tape library. I have found that the speed is really slow from the data domain to the tape library (around 11mbps). But zoning is there with ML3 tape library and data domain box. How can we resolve this?
It would be really helpful if someone could help us with this.

@bingo.1 @crazyrov , Thank you both of you. The issue is resolved. Now I can send backup from the Data domain to the Tape library. The solution was, enabling the Fiber channel.
From Networker--> go to Device -->then select devices --> then storage node --> then data domain disk --> click properties --> then configuration --> select Enable the fiber channel and hostname: hostname of the data domain.

As we do not know anything about your environment, it is hard to guide you.
I assume, that there is only one storage node - the NW server himself. Why don't you just connect another disk to you server, configure that as (A)FTD backup device, label it and clone the save set to it. Then you see how fast it will go ...

Hi Bingo,
Thanks for your response.
Yes, you are right we have storage node and NMC in the same server. We can do that but before that we need some information.
Here VMware backup is taken via vproxy over the IP into the data domain. After that, we manually cloning the backup from the Data domain to the Tape library. But the speed seems 11mbps which is like backup over IP.
But we have zoned between the Data domain and tape libraries also between the tape library and the Networker server. is it not possible to take clones from data domain to the tape library using FC (Vmware backup)? Could you please tell me what is the best practice for this?
Thank you in advance.

hi @Nipudatta , Since you mentioned that you are sending the backup data to the DD over IP I am assuming you are using ddboost and not the VTL on DD. Which means that even if you have a FC connected between DD and Tape Library, the data has to pass over IP to a storage node and then go over FC to the tape. So the bottle neck can be the network devices in the path. Also remember that the backup speed will be much higher than the cloning or recovery speed as the backup used de duplication.

Hi @crazyrov, Thanks for your response and link. Yes, I have checked your video which helped me a lot to understand the Networker software.
You are right we are using ddboost for taking backup from VMware. But when backup data is in Data domain. And then we are cloning it to Tape library manually, that's operation happen between DD and Tape Library, not from the client. So why it is not following the FC path? any idea?

Even if the data uses the network, the speed is too slow for a standard 1GbE line. So I suggested to use a disk to see how fast NW can go at all.
Obviously you have a FC connected tape drive. In the Configuration tab for the device, you will find the option 'Enable fibre channel'. It is for the Data Domain configuration but the description is very poor - aka non existent. I assume it is for the configuration of a DD device but the option is also valid for a tape drive. It is at least worth a try.

I dont think you can use a DD as a storage node. i echo what @bingo.1 mentioned that the FC config on DD is for VTL or D Boost over FC, I don't think DD supports direct Tape drive connected to it.
