UP2716D, daisy chain, black outs

@DELL-Chris M

This problem is very common with this UP2716D model of monitor as well as many others when DisplayPort daisy chaining with MST. This has NOTHING to do with x-rite calibration software, any other software or the video card, it is a problem with the technology on the monitors. I have used these monitors with multiple computers and different video cards and they always black out for a few seconds quite a few times a day. A firmware update would most likely fix the issue but Dell has never released one. To avoid the blacking out you cannot daisy chain and must connect each monitor directly to the video card, needing multiple video ports on the video card especially if you have 3+ monitors like me.

You replied to a 7 year old UP2716D DUCCS thread. Started your own thread.

Your issue it seems is with general black outs with multiple monitor in MST. Dell never released a public firmware for the UP2716D. Back then, the only way to get a UP2716D with newer firmware was via an in warranty used/refurbished exchange. Your workaround is good since most medium/high end video cards have at least two DP ports and one HDMI port.

Thanks for creating a new thread, I realize it's been a while but I still deal with this daily on my own systems. Yes, one way to avoid it is to plug in monitors directly, but that's not a solution for me and a lot of users that use sit-stand desks, Ergotron monitor mounting systems, and don't want a pile of long cables going over to their chassis. The daisy chaining feature minimizes the amount of cabling around the workspace, especially when one has to route cabling through channels and ducts in monitor mounting systems. I know these are old models now, but from the start Dell has never admitted that this is a problem with the MST technology on these and other monitors and have never addressed it with a firmware upgrade or replaced them under warranty. Dell reps have blamed video cards, software and other components for this failure. I had to deal with a lot of my clients to whom I've sold Dell systems to and spent countless time troubleshooting this problem.
