U4025QW, MacOS won't detect external webcam/microphone

setup:

• Surface Studio Laptop > U4025QW in Port #6 (TB)
• M1 Mac Studio > U4025QW in Port #3 (HDMI). 
  • Port #5 (USB-C) > M1 Mac Studio (USB-A)
• Blue Snowball Mic & Logitech Webcam connected in USB-A ports of U4025QW 

On the Surface Studio Laptop side, everything works as expected.  However, on the Mac, the webcam and mic are not detected.  I've tried factory resetting, unplugging for a minute, switching USB ports, etc. to no avail.  I'm using the included HDMI and USB-C->A cables.  

any suggestions?
