U4025QW, discrepancy between DDM and drivers website (M3T103 vs M3T102)

I'm having a recurring issue with my Dell U4025QW monitor, and I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this or knows a workaround.

Whenever my monitor or operating system enters a low-power state (not full sleep, but when the screen blacks out after inactivity), it takes noticeably longer to wake up compared to my other monitors. Every time, I get a message saying, "Fail to update the firmware." This happens consistently, and it’s starting to raise concerns about potential damage or long-term impact on the monitor.

Here’s where it gets confusing:

  • In Dell Display Manager (DDM), it shows that a firmware update (version M3T103) is available.

  • However, when I try to update through DDM, the process fails every single time.

  • On the Dell website, the latest firmware listed is version M3T102, with a release date of 7th March 2024.

So, DDM is showing a version ahead (M3T103) that doesn’t even exist on Dell’s official website.

This mismatch is really concerning, especially because the firmware update keeps failing, and DDM keeps trying to push this update every time.

For now, I’m looking for:

  1. A way to prevent DDM from repeatedly trying to update the firmware.

  2. Any insights on why there’s a discrepancy between the firmware versions on DDM and the Dell website.

  3. A workaround to reduce the wake-up time after the monitor blacks out.

Has anyone else faced this issue or found a solution? I feel like Dell needs to address this discrepancy ASAP. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

I see the October 21, 2024 M3T103 Windows OS firmware on the U4025QW Drivers & Downloads page.

Do not install the monitor firmware "through" DDM. Use the following instructions =

Hi Chris,

I guess the other issue is that this pop up comes up even though the firmware verison is optional and not critical. If I had my way, I wouldnt' update it to this version unless it were important. That being said, I factory reset my monitor in hopes that it would remove this pop up and black screen everytime I wake my monitor, but it didn't, so I'm now forced to do this update.

Looking at the instructions on that link you paged which was made by your community moderator, at the part where it explains connectivity, I get a bit confused and need clarity as soon as possible so I don't risk bricking my monitor.

I have my DP cable connected directly to my GPU also via DP. However, in the instructions it mentioned the below connectivity:

* PC to Monitor cables, three possible configurations =
- USB-C to USB-C video + data cable
- DP to DP video cable + USB-B to USB-A upstream cable
- HDMI to HDMI video cable + USB-B to USB-A upstream cable

This monitor does not have a USB-B port cable so I can't do any of these. The only connections I can do are the following:

- DP to DP + USB C to USB C

- USB C to USB C Video

and of course, there's HDMI, RJ-45 and USB A ports on my monitor.

Based on the connectivity of my Dells monitor ports, can you please guide me on what cables should be connected and to where before running this firmware update. There is no clear instruction on this for my monitor anywhere online, the monitors own firmware guide doesn't mention the stuff explained in the guide you sent.

Thanks in return.

First, what PC model? What specific GPU model? List all of the GPU video out ports.

@DELL-Chris M

Hi,

I have a custom built PC which has the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti EAGLE 12GB Graphics Card. Do you need to know the other components as well?

The GPU has the following ports:

x3 DP and x2 HDMI ports

I have a macbook pro and dell laptop that I can resort too of needed.

Might be easier running the firmware update with laptop that has TB/USB-C port. You then only need that single TB4 to TB4 cable connected to the laptop and the U4025QW #6 TB 4 upstream video + data port. Note, disconnect the Desktop PC cables from the U4025QW if running the firmware update from a Laptop.

Hi Chris,

The update failed unfortunately, here's the steps I took with screenshots and logs. The following is how I connected to the laptop and monitor:

And this the thunderbolt software on the laptop demonstrating there is TB cable:

I ran the update utility as administrator and got the following:

And the monitor shows this:

I checked the directory of the folder `C:\Dell\firmware\U4025QW` and a log file was created called `U4025QW_8XHNG34_ISPLog.txt`:

```
Start time: 2025/01/04:19:30:11
ModelName: U4025QW
ServiceTag: redacted
RMVersion: V1.9
UpdateResult: Fail
ScalarRebootResult: Pass
NewFWInfo: (mcu:version, per line)
U4025QW:M3T103
HUB1:1.04
HUB2:2.04
HUB4:4.05
HUB:3.03
PDC:f807.12.e9.0000000800000008
;201, Update takes up to xx minutes. Do not power off or disconnect cable while updating.>, <5, Update error>
End time: 2025/01/04:19:31:12
```

In the log folder there are also verbose logs, but I don't know where to paste those since it's 700+ lines.

Troubleshooting I tried:

1) Turn off, unplug the power, and turn back on to try running it again

2) Running as admin

3) Checking if it firmware installer has read permission (it does)

I don't know what else to try / do?

I forgot to mention, I even disabled all AV software, and unnecessary background processes as advised in the instructions, as you can see below, nothing is running on my PC other than default software:

I ran the update on the Dell Precision 7680 multiple times.

I used this as a reference (Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt™ Hub Monitor - U4025QW | Dell UK), so according to this, I've connected it to #6, which is the number you stated as well:

So that would be 6. Thunderbolt™ 4 upstream port (up to 140W EPR [11])

That should have worked. Maybe another U4025QW users will reply with their opinions. At this point you have two choices =

* Contact GHN chat, give them the private Service Tag, verify ownership, etc. Show them the troubleshooting and get an exchange

-or-

* Wait for a new firmware update to be posted and try it
