U3818DW, connectivity issue after switching devices via USB-C
Dell U3818DW
I’m experiencing recurring connectivity issues with my Dell U3818DW monitor when switching between two laptops connected via USB-C. Here’s a breakdown of the situation:
1. I initially connect my MacBook to the U3818DW via USB-C, and it works flawlessly for an extended period.
2. Later, my wife connects her PC to the same monitor with the same USB-C cable, which also works without issue.
3. After she disconnects, I attempt to reconnect my MacBook to the monitor. However, it now fails to maintain a stable connection, linking for a few seconds before disconnecting repeatedly.
To troubleshoot, I have:
• Set the input source to USB-C (not auto-select).
• Restarted my MacBook and completely powered down the monitor (disconnecting power for over a minute).
• Verified that both the monitor and MacBook have the latest firmware and software updates.
Despite these steps, the U3818DW monitor continues cycling through connection attempts without success. Could you suggest further troubleshooting steps, or is there a setting specific to the U3818DW that might resolve this issue?

None. Dell does not offer refunds or trade ins on old monitors.

for more context on the macbook; its a MacBook Pro, Apple M2 Pro chip, 16 GB and running Mac OS 15.0.1 (24A348).

The six year old U3818DW did not have full Apple OS support. All Dell provided was firmware M3B106 which can be run in Apple OS.
So you have two Laptops (MacBook and unknown PC) and are hot swapping them on the powered on U3818DW via USB-C.
What PC model and operating system is the second PC your wife is using? What video out ports are on that second PC? The reason I ask is because I would reserve the U3818DW USB-C cable and USB-C port for the MacBook. Then test the second PC using the U3818DW DP or HDMI in ports.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the troubleshooting suggestions. I wanted to provide some additional context based on recent testing and observations:
• Device Details: My wife’s PC is an HP ProBook 450 G7, which has an HDMI output. However, switching to HDMI instead of USB-C limits functionality—features like the USB-C-connected webcam and sound system require additional setup, which isn’t ideal.
• MacBook Comparison: I also use another MacBook with the M1 Apple chipset, running macOS 14.5, which connects seamlessly to the U3818DW without any issues. In contrast, my primary MacBook, which is running macOS 15, experiences the disconnection issue when switching back after my wife’s PC is connected.
Given this, could the connectivity problem be related to macOS 15 compatibility or software settings? Any insights on whether this is a known issue would be really helpful.
Thank you for your assistance with this!

* Unknown. Never tested on the U3818DW.
For the HP ProBook 450 G7, in addition to the HDMI cable, connect the U3818DW USB 3.0 B to A Upstream cable.

Not getting it to work with the OS15. What are possiblities to buy a new monitor and get some sort of refund on the returned old monitor?
thanks
