sometimes using TV as monitor

I have been occasionally using my TV as a monitor, for games, movies etc, connected by VGA cable. I saw a post about the fact that windows xp will automatically set to the best settings, and this has been working very well. However, now, when I try to coneect my computer to the tv, it doesn't work - the tv says "invalid format". Any ideas why this happened and what I can do about it?

Many thanks for your input.

andreamp118,

Did you change the windows desktop resolution from when it talked to the TV and now?

Yes I did - the last time I had connected it to the tv it didn't reset on my monitor and I now have the resolution set at 1280 x 960. I did try it set at 1280 x 768 (which I think is standard tv resolution) and then connected it to the tv again, but it still said "invalid format". To be honest, I don't know what the resolution was originally set at - I kept it at whatever it was on when I first bought the computer.
