S2421HN, gives error after adding MS Teams to MacBook Pro
Have a MacBook Pro 15" and have had two monitors attached for years. One is an Acer, and the other a Dell S2421HN. I keep the laptop closed and use the monitors as extended displays all the time (the Acer is probably set as the main display). The only change I made recently is to add MS Teams as Skype is going away. Now, unless I have the laptop cracked open about two inches, the Dell monitor won't display and gives me a message about the display settings. "The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. Please change your input timing to 1920 x 1080, 60Hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specifications.'
I can't set the display setting for the Dell to those values unless the laptop is open; otherwise it shows me fewer selections. I tried resetting the Dell monitor to no avail and unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in. There are no updates for the display drivers and my Mac is up to date.
I was told that Privacy Permission changes are needed after adding Teams, but even if I don't have Teams open at all, the Dell goes dark, all my open apps move to the Acer monitor, and the Dell gives me that message when I close the laptop. I obviously can't see what is displaying on the laptop when it is closed, but the apps from the Acer move to it. Also, I had the Dock set to display on the bottom so is always on the laptop screen now so I can't get to any apps when it is closed. It used to be on the bottom of whichever extended monitor the cursor was on. If I move the Dock to the left side of the screen, it is visible when I close the laptop.
I have had this same setup for months and months with no problems, until the latest Mac update and I added the Teams app

Yah, it sounds like it needs the battery replaced again. Sounds like a fire hazard.
Do you have another monitor you can try in place of the Dell?

Agreed. A swollen battery should be removed. I do not know the Apple policy.

How is the S2421HN currently connected to the MacBook using which ports and cable?
How is the Acer currently connected to the MacBook using which ports and cable?
Test #1 =
* Turn the MacBook off
* Turn the Acer off
* Turn the S2421HN off
* Disconnect the Acer video cable from the MacBook
* Turn the MacBook on
* Turn the S2421HN on
Now, with just those two, do you still have the issue? I mean can you close the lid all the way and use just the S2421HN in extended mode?
Test #2 =
* Turn the MacBook off
* Turn the Acer off
* Turn the S2421HN off
* Disconnect the S2421HN video cable from the MacBook
* Reconnect the Acer video to the MacBook
* Turn the MacBook on
* Turn the Acer on
Now, with just those two, do you still have the issue? I mean can you close the lid all the way and use just the Acer in extended mode?

Chris,
The S2421HN is connected via HDMI to a small hub, which is connected via USB-C to the frontmost port on the right side of the MacBook. That hub also has a connection for my USB keyboard, a USB camera, and a wireless mouse.
The Acer is connected to a VGA to USB-C converter, which is plugged into the rearmost port on the same side of the MacBook. It only has VGA and DVI-D In capability.
The MacBook only has USB-C ports, of course.
I followed your test instructions. For each separate test, I turned everything off, and detached both monitors. I then turned on the MacBook, attached the singular monitor and turned it on. I checked the Display settings both with the MacBook closed and with it opened.
Test 1:
The Dell worked fine when it was the only monitor attached to the MacBook. It showed as the only display in settings when the laptop was closed, and as an extended display when the laptop was open.
Test 2:
The Acer worked fine when it was the only monitor attached to the MacBook. It showed as the only display in settings when the laptop was closed and as an extended display when the laptop was open.
The MacBook is from 2017 but has behaved itself until now. The S2421HN is from 2021, and the Acer is from 2015 (I had no idea it was 10 years old). The three items have been working fine together until a couple of days ago.
Thanks for your help!
Judy

First, you said "...no problems, until the latest Mac update and I added the Teams app." Have you tried uninstalling the Teams app? I take it this is Microsoft Teams? If this does turn out to be it, you may need to try a different teams app.
Second, have you tried rolling back the Mac update? I'm not sure if it's a forced update like some are thru Windows. Is it a forced update?
You might also want to try Mac/Apple community if there is such a thing. I'm convinced, especially after your testing, the problem is in the Mac. That's not any bias toward Dell either. I like Dell, but I'm not paid.

I uninstalled Microsoft Teams and restarted the MacBook Pro. I still have the same problem. Apple does have a 'Community' and I also posted this there. Sadly, I haven't had a reply from anyone there in several days. I looked into rolling back the Mac update but the video I watched is more complicated than I want to attempt and there does not seem to be an easy way to do it.
I also think there is a problem with the Mac itself as it seems to be bulging and has already had the battery replaced once. I like Dell, too. If I didn't love my iPad, I would probably go back to a Dell as I had them for work and they were solid devices.
Thanks for your response. I created a new post on Apple with all the info from above including the testing I did, and maybe someone there will help me.

I've already had a swollen battery replaced once in this MacBook, so I ordered myself a new computer today.
Thanks for your help!
