Recommended Power Settings?

I set up my new 8400 on Friday and have been installing hardware and software ever since. There have been a number of weird blue screen errors and other start up and switch user accounts problems--the system freezes at times. Trying to determine the source of the problems.

On my old machine I always set the power options to go to screen saver after 25 mins, monitor off after two hours, hard disks off after four hours, and sleep and standby never. That worked fine until I got the 2001FP, which ran VGA on that machine--it sometimes didn't want to come back on, forcing me to restart.

With the 8400 this problem has been much worse--I found that if the monitor had gone off it just would not come back on. Today I changed the power settings to go to SS after 25 mins and set monitor off, hard disks off, sleep, and standby all to "never."

Is there any potential danger in using these settings?

First of all, the hibernate function was only meant for notebook computers, to save battery, not for desktops, even though some desktops work with this function, but many others do not.  The Moderator has stated on this Dell Forum, advising members with desktops not to use this.  Just use the power options for the screen to go off at a given time.

There is really no danger, just a big headache with hibernate and its just better to leave this off your desktop.  I just use the time limit for my monitor to go off and nothing else.  You are really not using that much energy doing it this way.  Other's will weigh in on this matter later, I'm sure...Good luck.

SR45:

Thanks for your reply. I've found that setting the monitor to go off at all tends to freeze the system, which is why I have it set on "never." It kicks into screen saver after 25 mins.

I am not concerned about power consumption at all--only concern is whether these "never settings" could damage my system in any way.

I don't use screen saver at all on my systems, and is not necessary for today's screens, but sorry to hear of the glitch you are having.  I don't have a clue about what it might be, however, someone around here just might, so hang on for awhile and lets see...Good luck

>>>screen savers [are not] necessary for today's screens

Didn't know that--still like them, though. Thanks.
