Difference in Color LCD Monitor Analog Only / Multimedia LCD Display / CRT Monitor

I am still one of the owners of the big clunky monitors (going on 7 years) and am looking into purchasing one of the nice new thin skinny monitors.  I am totally confused as to what the difference is in the different Monitors.  I do not play video games, so that is not an issue.  Can someone help me determine what is what and what I need.  I want to get a 17".    HELP//////
