DDM 2.3.1.14 resets monitor orientation on startup

I have a U3223QE and a P2723QE connected to through DisplayPort on a same Windows 11 PC. The 32" is on default landscape orientation. The 27" is on flipped landscape. Both monitors are updated with their latest firmware.

After DDM (Dell Display Manager) update 2.3.1.14, all the connected monitors get reset to default Landscape orientation when the app starts. As I have it set to start on Windows startup, it happens every time I reset my PC.

It's possible to reproduce the issue by changing any of the monitors to any orientation other than default landscape, then exiting Dell Display Manager and opening it again.

This wasn't an issue before 2.3.1.14 update.

Hi everyone,

The new DDM is available as of January 8th. To fix this issue, please update to the latest version.

Noted. For now, uninstall DDM 2.3.1.14. Reboot. Then install the previous working version 2.3.0.22.

I had the same issue since the last update.

Easy fix: uninstall Dell Display Manager. Problem solved.

This issue persists and appears to have been introduced this summer. It was not doing this "default everything to landscape" until recently. For my multi-monitor setup it take around 10 mintues to reset landscapes to portraits - including the time to revert how it also scrambles the multi-monitor layout.

Started to have this issue as well since yesterday onwards, secondary screen is reset always to landscape (no matter what "fixes" I tried). Shame ... will take out auto run of app and wait for a future fix (hopefully).

I have U4320Q and U2520D (portrait) with DDM 2.3.1.16.

This solution works for me:

1. Go to OSD menu of display with "portrait" mode and set rotation.

2. Reinstall DDM 2.3.1.16 (Just to be safe).

So Dell cannot hire a single good developer to solve something that can be solved in 1 to 10 lines of code. WOW.

Instead of working on the problem and releasing the next version next day, they advise us to go to old version. How does Dell happen to hire such developers at the first place?

Hi All,

Thanks for bringing this issue to our notice, based on the inputs provided so far our engineering teams attempted to replicate the issue and suggested below workaround:

Set orientation via DDM, DDM will synchronize the setting to OSD.

If the issue is not resolved then kindly share below:

  • Steps to replicate the issue.
  • System model.
  • OS version.
  • Monitor model.
  • DDM version.
  • A short video of the issue.

We are also experiencing the same issue. Using a Latitude 5531 plugged into a P2724DEB via USB-C which then has a P2222H connected downstream through DisplayPort. The P22 has been set in both Windows and DDM to Portrait (flipped). Closing DDM and opening it immediately causes the P22 to flip back to landscape. If reinstalling DDM, the flip happens immediately after accepting the terms and conditions of DDM, not during install but after install when the window automatically pops up. I decided not to roll back to another version but set the rotation setting on the P22's OSD as P4V3L77 suggested. Setting it here seems to make it stick and prevent DDM from changing it.

@DELL-Nat M

The above solution does not work

I have two Dell U2723QE monitors.  Beginnning with the update this summer, my secondary monitor resets to landscape every time DDM starts.

I have tried many times to set the orientation via DDM, it does not stick.

To reproduce:

 - Have 2 monitors connected to your computer

 - Go in to DDM and set the orientation of your SECONDARY monitor to "Portrait, flipped"

 - DDM automatically closes, which is HIGHLY ANNOYING

 - Go to the system tray and exit DDM

 - Start DDM again

 - Poof, All monitors are landscape

What steps are your develpers using to persist the screen orientation?  Is there another way to persist the settings through restarts of DDM?

I am also experiencing the same problem, which is similar to @gorillacoder .

DDM is resetting the "Portrait, flipped" monitor to "Landscape" whenever I reconnect my XPS9520 (Windows 11 Pro) to the monitors. I use DDM 2.3.1.16.

The fix for me was to set the "Rotation" option in the on screen menu to the proper orientation. It seems DDM is checking the OSD menu orientation, and apply that to the entire monitor. My 2 side (portrait) monitors kept flipping back to landscape on boot up. I used the OSD to set the orientation of the menu itself correctly on the screen, and boom - every boot up now, DDM doesn't mess with my orientation settings.

@Goatblaster unfortunately this is not an option to me as I'm using the monitor on flipped landscape mode (it's upside down). This option doesn't exist in the OSD menu.

I have just installed the update to 2.3.2.18 and the issue persists.

After testing @Goatblaster suggestion, It looks like after 2.3.1.14 DDM started force syncing the monitor OSD orientation with the Windows screen orientation. And it forces it on every startup by grabbing the latest settings from the monitor itself instead of what was set in the app.

I see two problems with that approach:

1) If the monitor OSD doesn't support a given orientation (like flipped landscape) it will never be able to sync with the screen orientation and it will reset the image on every Windows startup to whatever orientation the OSD is set in the monitor's memory. This is what happens to my P2723QE.

2) If for some reason the users want the OSD orientation to be different from the OS orientation, they currently can't with DDM enabled.

My suggestion is to add a checkbox bellow the "Orientation" option in DDM so we can enable or disable "Sync with OSD orientation". Or something like that.
