Connection cable question

I just purchased a Dell 1905FP moniter and it came with 4 cables. One goes from the monitor to the electrical outlet, and one (the VGA cable)has a blue plug that goes into the back of the monitor and the plug to the PC is one that has the screws on the side to tighten the connection. Also got a DVI cable, but the instructions show to choose between the VGA (suggested) and the DVI (optional)  Plus there was a USB cable which I have also connected from the back of the monitor to one of the hi-speed ports on the back of my tower according to the diagram included with the monitor. Do I actually need to have the monitor connected twice to my tower or is this overkill?  The moniter is working fine, but I couldn't figure out if the diagrams sent with the monitor meant to hook up both or simply one or the other.  If it is one or the other, which is better?  Thanks!! :smileyhappy:

Connect Power? - obviously :)

Connect VGA? - only if you're not using DVI

Connect DVI?  - only if you're not using VGA

Connect USB? - only if you want to use the monitor as a USB hub (i.e. use the connections built into the side of the panel for things like your keyboard, mouse, camera, etc.)

Thanks for the quick response.  Now this leads me to another question..........

Which is better the VGA or the DVI - the picture instructions said that the VGA was suggested.......I know that one is for Analog, and one is for Digital..........but which is better?  Does it make a difference in the way my screen appears?

Again, thanks!!

Use the DVI cable if you can - meaning your graphics card supports DVI output at at least the native resolution of your monitor. Fall back on the VGA connection if that's not the case.
