Recommended Mailbox Size Limits

Community,

I was searching the Internet looking for a article or document that would provide me with number of mailbox users per server limits. I was told that a good rule of thumb is 4000-6000 users per server. I was trying to find something to back this statement up. I was unable to find anything that gave me a limit on this. What do you use as a limit and is there any documentation to back up your claim or is this from your experience with Exchange 2010 at your multiple customer sights. during my search I did find a nice article on "The exchange team Blog" written by Nicole Allen below is the link to the article it was a nice read

Hello William

The server sizing will depend on user usage profiles (megacycles/mailbox, IOPS/maibox) and recommended hardware for each profile.  The below link is are good examples for sizing a server base on different Worker Profiles:

- Heavy Worker Profile:  4600 Mailbox per server

- Medium Worker Profile:  4725 Mailbox per server

- Light Worker Profile:  9000 Mailbox per server

- Very Light Worker Profile:  20100 Mailbox per server

This info is from Exchange 2000 and 2003, also the last profile point is for Very Light Worker profile

Here you have an Exchange 2010 Mailbox Server Role Design example:

I haven´t found a document as previous versions because I think in Exchange 2010 there are too many considerations in terms of sizing: Mailbox capacity, IO req, CPU requirements, DBs copies, Memory requirements, storage, Resiliency, etc...

For this reason we have to use the Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator and configure our Exchange environment depending our requirements.

Thanks for the correction and I agree that we need to use the Mailbox Server Role Requirements Calculator.  The example I used above is to show the concept that there is no limitation of 4000-6000 users per server.  That depends on user usage profiles (megacycles/mailbox, IOPS/maibox) and recommended hardware for each profile.

It seems users# is not always first thing to consider but messages# in total. It is recommended no more than about 2500 - 5000 messages in any of the critical path folders.  The critical path folders are the Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, and Sent Item folder. Ideally, keep the Inbox, Contacts and Calendar to 1000 or less.

I like the article.
