Trap 00000006

Hi folks,

 

My latitude C840 has been running perfectly well until today, when for no (apparent) reason the screen froze, no mouse etc. fan still running though. I switched it off via the on/off switch (nothing else worked) and tried rebooting, but all that happened was the 'Caps Lock' light was flashing for a period before the machine switched of, tried this two or three times without any success.

Left the machine for around 10 mins and tried again, this time a message 'Load dll needed for HAL' was displayed, then re-boot again to receive an error "Trap 00000006 =============Double Fault============" followed by a page of hex, which was all '00000000', I tried twice with the same result.

 

I left it for a further 10 mins, and this time it booted into XP, and began loading, received the background and icons etc. and the mouse cursor moved, however this froze again after a few minutes.

 

Does anyone have any idea whatmay be causing this, and how I can rectify it?
