Online official Dell drivers don't work on XPS 17 (A14 L702X) -- please provide latest OEM drivers!!!
Update: Dell has updated their website with workable drivers. Here's a very brief rundown of how to perform a clean installation of Windows 7 (x64). This is especially useful if you've already wiped the drive. Remember to reboot whenever prompted.
- Grab all the drivers for your system from Dell's product page (or if you haven't wiped yet, from C:\Drivers).
- Install the Intel Huron River Chipset driver first.
- Install the Intel driver from Dell's page. If this doesn't work right, use my version. Do NOT use Windows Update or Intel's generic version.
- Install Dell's NVIDIA drivers. If you like, you can install NVIDIA's latest Verde beta drivers from their website on top of that.
- Install Dell's Realtek audio driver. Then install the Realtek HD audio driver from Realtek's website on top of that.
- Install all other necessary drivers and software as you see fit (HDMI, USB 3.0, LAN, WLAN, Bluetooth, Touchpad, Webcam, Card Reader, QuickSet).
There have been some reports of issues surrounding the ST Micro Accelerator drivers. Simply don't install them until these issues are resolved.
Thanks to Aergan for more in-depth instructions (see his post on page 4 for additional details).

[Old post below:]
Title really says it all -- Dell's official online drivers don't work on their latest XPS 17 systems (December) because their BIOS is too new.
I received a Dell XPS 17 L702X the day before yesterday in the mail and promptly installed my clean copy of Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (purchased as a U of M student). I proceeded to the driver page in an attempt to set up the necessary drivers, but was unable to do so because the latest BIOS revision and firmware on the chipset does not support many of the A/V drivers and software found on Dell's driver site.
The following drivers fail to install or properly function on the BIOS A14 system (downgrading the BIOS is impossible):
- Intel HD 3000 graphics driver -- does not install; "unsupported system".
- (Workaround: please PM me. Do NOT use the official drivers from Intel's site, since they do not support Dell's implementation of LCD power saving and you may have flickers on battery power with the generic drivers).
- NVIDIA driver -- fails to install; "no compatible hardware detected".
- (Workaround: PM me. Official NVIDIA drivers do not support Optimus and may not install correctly -- a few old versions install but severely cripple the onboard Intel graphics support and therefore battery life)
- Audio drivers -- installs but no audio can be heard.
- (Workaround: install latest driver from the Realtek website. Caveat: you WILL lose Waves Maxxaudio and your audio will sound very dull/flat/muted until you open "Dell Audio by Realtek" and make adjustments.)
- Dell QuickSet -- fails to install; "unsupported system"
- (No Known Wokaround -- 3 hardware buttons will be useless and the software will be unavailable.)
Windows wiped the (massive) 20GB recovery partition during clean OS installation so I can't access the previous OS, and the drivers from the website (and the included DVD) WILL NOT INSTALL either -- if someone here is willing to provide the latest drivers, that would be great. Technically you're in the clear since they're being provided by a dell.com website. ;)
Many people were complaining of the same things but all had to simply return their laptops because the technicians told them it was "defective" and restored their OS with the latest drivers (which, again, are nowhere to be found on the official driver page). Please provide the latest drivers (or any drivers that install and provide the promised functionality on the latest, shipped, unchangeable A14 BIOS) on the driver support page.
Also please note that is very bad practice to ship hardware that cannot legally be reinstalled properly with a clean copy of Windows 7.

"I forgot to mention Dell Quickset which provides some of the hotkey tools for the keyboard (Top right application buttons). The version in the Dell supplied drivers folder will not install as you will no longer have the Dell ID installed on your system. You can download an updated copy of this via Dell's driver support section for the 1702X which I hear has been updated to fix this"
The Quickset driver on Dells driver downloads page has not been modified and the install problem is still there.
How does one edit the original MSI file to skip the system ID check? A step by step guide would be greatly appreciated.

Ignore my previous post. I missed the step by step earlier in the thread.
I have a solution for Dell Quickset. The MSI does custom action checking which can be easily edited out via Orca or InstEd (Google for them). This change will just skip the error that "The system is not supported" because the MSI cannot read the Dell System ID after a reinstall of Windows 7.
Further editing is required if you need to perform an unattended or silent install.
Download the latest copy of the Quckset package EXE (Using 11.0.22 as my example) from Dell and unpack it via 7zip.
Open the Quickset64.msi with an MSI editor (Using InstEd).
Browse the "InstallUISequence" table
Remove sequence 29: "SystemNotSupportedExit Not REMOVE="ALL" AND IsSystemInSetupLst=0"
Save transformed MSI and exit MSI editor.
Run your transformed MSI and enjoy.
Good luck!
Thanks Aergan. It installed perfectly after those modifications.

Interestingly enough, my system didn't require this hack at all -- it worked fine with the installer on Dell's website. It was the very last thing I installed, so perhaps the system was already properly signalling the requisite information at that point? In any case, it installed flawlessly with the first attempt after all of the main framework was in place (all chipset, usb, devices, graphics drivers, etc).

Having no joy upgrading the Intel HD video driver from build 8.15.10.2455 to build 15.22.50.64.2509 (copied inf file over and manual installed).
Keep getting the intermittent screen brightness flickers running this driver with the on-board display.

Okay. I see Dell has removed their updated version of the Intel HD 3000 driver from the support page. I understand this can be very frustrating to users, since this driver remains the only one that does not properly install or recognize the system, forcing users to accept a misconfigured generic driver from Intel which may cause damage to the chipset and display, since it uses a subset of features the L702X does not support. Please do NOT use Intel's official drivers for risk of damaging your system (or at the very least experiencing problems with battery life and screen flickering on battery power).
I've made a very simple point-and-click installer for everyone and will update my OP to include this file as well. I recommend Dell include this driver version on their support site. I've been testing this driver in a series of scenarios over the past month, and it has performed admirably in every respect. The driver version is also slightly newer than the latest version Intel has posted on their official website. This version includes Dell's specific hardware vendor string recognition, as well as the appropriate feature subset support featured in in Dell's modified drivers.
Redistribution of this executable should be fine, provided you abide by Intel's license and only use it on applicable systems. Remember, this isn't an official Dell solution. It is a solution from Intel and myself. Use this at your own risk (but this risk is probably lower than using the Windows Update / generic driver for an extended period of time).

I have bios A16 installed and I don't see anything about Optimus in the bios. I seem to recall seeing something in A10 which is what came with my machine initially. I have upgraded to A12, A14 and now A16. To be honest this is the first time I have tried to go this route since I received my machine.

Hi Gabe-A, your driver distributable installed without issue and has improved general use of the Intel HD graphics controller thanks to the recent driver build. Less issues with media playback when using this device now and no display brightness / timing issues.
Many thanks.

Do you happen to have that .MST file for quickset installation?. I found the thread on notebookreview but the file is no longer uploded. I would be really thankfull if you could upload it...

The solution to all of these issues have been resolved by Dell and the instructions in the first post. There should be no need for any further steps. Please let me know if following the instructions listed in the first post doesn't work, because the consensus appears to indicate everything has already been sorted out. Thanks.

No I have yet to find another solution to dell quick set anywhere. I found one post which said copy the program files but all the links are dead so I created this method. Its the only one which worked for me. Even the first post says the three soft buttons will be useless. They now work for me :)

It's there in the first post. Disregard the portion under "Old Post Below." The hardware buttons work fine. You can configure them in the Quickset settings.

I see your point but even the updated quick set did not work for me lol
