inspiron 9100 notebook with a ati radeon 9700. I am having problems setup for dual external monitors

I have a inspiron 9100 notebook with a ati radeon 9700 video card and I am having problems setup for dual external monitors. The Monitor 2 shows up blank and take the look of whatever is in the top left.

The curser looks fine but nothing shows up on the screen other than the curser arrow

The curser moves over and window disappears on screen 2 but you can still see the curser.

I tried testing the Fn+F8 key used to toggle between the LCD and external and what ever screen is screen 2 repeats the problem, even the laptop screen display’s the same problem if it is screen 2

I got screen 2 on 640 x 480 8 bit and see some of the picture but horizontal lines show up and the size is two times the size and will repeat the first inch of the item over the whole screen

Screen 2 is 1280 by 1024, when I change the resolution of screen 2 to 1280 by 1024 I only see the color of the object in the far right top of screen 1
