It is supposed to work that way. It slows (Throttles) the processor speed to conserve power and control the heat. You can adjust the power settings by left clicking the power icon in the taskbar X Balanced, X Power Saver, or High Performance. Just a note: I leave mine on High Performance all the time and it works for me.

Never mind I just noticed in your sig it says XP Pro....

 

I originally was assuming you were running Vista as you said you just received the notebook. Sorry. Assuming will get you everytime.

 

Go to the control panel.

Start >> Settings >> Control Panel.

When in Control Panel select " Power Options "

 

OR

 

 

From there you should be able to set it how you want.

 

The below is how to set it from Vista.

 

There are lots of ways to get there.

 

See in the task bar either the battery icon ( Running on the battery ) or a battery icon with a plug ( Plugged in ). Put the mouse pointer on that and press the left mouse key. A small window should open with the power options available. If you cannot find this see below.

 

OR

 

Right click on the desktop.

Select Personalize.

Then select the " Screen Saver " option.

At the bottom of that window select " Change Power Settings ".

Change them as you like from the resulting window.

 

OR

 

Open the start menu.

At the bottom there is a search function.

In that block type " power " without the quotes.

Then press enter.

A window should open with the power options.

Here you can set them and adjust them as needed.

 

Really! Trust me they are there. All of the above ways does the same thing.
