Inspirion 17 5767 Keyboard Backlight not turning off when idle...
I just replaced my previous 17" Inspirion with a new Model 5767 (17") and the backlit keyboard remains lit at all times, 24/7, even after the screen has gone dark. I keep the system running 24/7, never going into sleep mode as long as it's plugged in, the same as I have done for all laptops in the past.
The previous Inspiron 17 also has the backlit keyboard, and it works perfectly, going dark shortly after being idle.
I have gone to all the mentioned steps, including the Windows Mobility Center and resetting the idle time setting to all of the different options, but the keyboard remains lit at all times...
I should not have to resort to manually turning the backlight on and off as needed. and to do so requires I open the Windows Mobility Center, as the noted keyboard shortcuts appear to work ( + )
Any Help Appreciated. I just spend a week doing a clean install of all my software and files to clean things up from older system to system transfers to eliminate things that were no longer needed and don't want to do that all over again if this system is faulty!!

Talked with Dell support after needing a repair, and after much back and forth they figured out a solution.
The setting overriding the keyboard backlight timer can be accessed from the BIOS, and relates to turning off the "Keyboard Backlight on AC power" setting. Depending on the computer and BIOS version, the actual setting name might be different, as the tech suggested two different setting titles, and it was neither of them. In any case, removing this setting allows the QuickSet settings to actually work while plugged in. A user will still have to get QuickSet working by reinstalling the drivers and updating the BIOS like I did before.

Update: alone does switch keyboard back light between Hi, Low and off. However, the automatic dimming after "x" minutes/seconds is still not working!! Is this functionality no longer supported on the Inspiron 5767 even though the options exist within the Windows Mobility keyboard backlight settings??

Was the previous Inspiron running the same operating system as this one? Explore the Windows 10 Power options for keyboard backlight options. Look in Power Plan- Change plan settings- Change advanced power settings.

Chris, Yes, same OS, Windows 10 latest updates, on the old system. I just booted it up to check. The old system is an Inspiron 5759. Both have Windows 10 Home, Version 1703, Build 15063.608.
I have tried all of the available windows settings. I found nothing for the keyboard backlighting in the Advanced Power Settings.....

This has to be an operating system or driver issue. It's not a hardware fault. All we can do is hope other 5767 owners will chime in with their findings.

I just got my Inspiron 5567 and have been searching for a solution. I can have the backlight Off, 50%, or 100%, but there is no timeout options to be found. If I look under the Windows Mobility options, there are no Dell hardware tabs that would normally allow for customization. I tried reinstalling QuickSet, but it says that this is "not a supported system"... the preinstalled Dell Help and Support won't load and to download drivers Dell System Detect won't work either. This is my third Dell Laptop and I am pretty disappointed this go around. This laptop should in theory be far better than my older Dell, and cost me more, but everything feels cheaply designed and just a bit off...

I kinda figured things out a little t get me part way there, but still things aren't working.... I manually updated the BIOS (released Sept 14) and uninstalled/reinstalled QuickSet (January 2017). Now the Dell options in Windows Mobility appear, but changing the timeout settings does nothing to the backlight...

So, If i have it unplugged, the timeout works, but not if I am plugged in.... There is no options in power settings to change this as far as i can tell.

The Inspiron 15-5567 and Inspiron 17-5767 are the same family of laptop. So based on your troubleshooting, the culprit could be any combination of the installed BIOS version and the Quickset version.
Inspiron 15-5567 & Inspiron 17-5767 latest BIOS and Quickset =
1.1.6
10.17.19, A01

Looking at this on my phone, did not see the messages from Jared743. Good to know I'm not the only one! Also, now realize the two systems Chris was comparing are mine & Jared's, as my old one is actually an Inspiron 17-5759, not what I noted above.
Interesting about the difference between being plugged in or on battery. Sure enough, I just checked that out, and when unplugged, it works as set in Quickset. Plugging in overrides and leaves keyboard backlighting on full time.... Looks like something changed in the BIOS between my old 17-5759 and the new 17-5767.....

Chris,
This Inspiron 17-5767 is BRAND NEW. I have had it 10 days!! Everything that has asked to be updated has been updated, including the BIOS, now at 1.1.6.
Quickset is how it came installed, version 10.17.14.3 (7/20/2016 5:40 PM)
The old Inspiron 17-5567 probably has older bios & quickset, but still works properly, turning off the keyboard backlight after specified time of inactivity. Very strange.
Since I use the laptop in varying lighting conditions, and the keyboard lighting is nice to have. Just a pain to have to remember to turn it off all the time when it is supposed to be handled automatically!!
