Frequent Start Up problems

I have an ageing Inspiron 1750 which has developed intermittent but frequent failure to start up.  I've replaced the HDD with a new SSD and a clean installation of Windows 10 so it's not a Windows problem.  Runs fine when it's started but will often take many hard shut down and restart attempts with a grey screen most times. Eventually I'll get the Set Up/Boot options screen and it'll start from there. I've completely stripped it apart and checked the MoBo for any obvious bad connections etc. but can't see anything.  But I'm assuming I have a hardware MoBo, maybe BIOS problem and don't know how to test to find/fix the problems.  Any suggestions welcomed please.

PADDLE SPORT DESIGNS ,

Unfortunately, there are no updated bios or any other Windows 10 drivers for this computer.

If it were a driver problem would it not have become evident immediately after the original upgrade to Windows 10? Obviously the Win 10 check before upgrade was happy with the hardware or is that not to be relied upon?   It worked fine for about 12 months before developing the problem.   I don't understand why it works some times but not all the time.  Any other possibilities or is it a lost cause.

Please, keep in mind, Dell doesn't list any drivers for windows 10 therefore you'll have to hope Microsoft installed them for you - windows updates & device manager). Dell does list drivers for windows 7 and Vista.

Please run the diagnostic tool to check the hardware on the system by following steps below:

1. Power off system. Remove all peripherals except AC adapter.

2. Power on system, quick start tapping the F12 key continuously until you see Preparing one time boot menu in the top right corner of the screen. At the boot menu, select and run Diagnostic. Report back any error code.

" Runs fine when it's started but will often take many hard shut down and restart attempts with a grey screen most times "

If there're no error codes, try to boot into windows again and quickly installed the drivers and firmware through the windows updates. Type Settings onto [Cortana] search box, select Update & Security, and then Check For Updates. If there are updates, select "Restart Now". Do the process over and over until latest updates are installed.

Lastly,

Since this is the holiday season, you might consider buying a brand new Dell computer. The prices are dropping each day as it get closer to Christmas and New Year. I would suggest checking Dell com, Microsoft and Best Buy.

Or....

Installed / update Drivers / firmware in device manager. Type device manager onto search box, right click each drivers, and then select Update. You'll have to update every single drivers listed in device manager. If the computer shut down before updated drivers in device manager then try to update in safe mode with networking.

Since that laptop is old, you may want to consider turning it into a Chromebook using the free CloudReady software.

Interesting idea but doesn't help me running all my windows apps. etc.  But I have an even older Dell machine so maybe I'll experiment.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Sadly the funds don't stretch to a new machine at any price so got to keep trying with this one.  So the furious tapping at the F12 with a blank grey screen did get me to the boot options screen so thanks for that tip to start with.  Ran the diagnostics and all passed without any error codes.  Restarted OK and it finished the Fall Creators Update which is what started the latest episode a few days ago. Updates have been a main source of the problem but not always.   I'll now try and find any new drivers and update them in device manager and see if it makes any difference to future start ups.  It's always booted OK from the Dell splash/boot option screen,  just getting there was the issue but now I know I can force it to come up it will help in future.

Your help is much appreciated.  Thanks.
