External audio output no longer functioning

For some reason, my external audio output jack has become non-functional. The internal speaker is working perfectly. I've run  a Microsoft computer diagnostics and everything is working properly.  I've opened and checked both my "hardware and sound" settings, and the same in my "power options"  settings. all drivers appear to be functioning properly.

I'm no computer whiz, so I'm muddling through as best I can. My fantastic external sound system is still functional when using my monitor in TV mode, so I know that's not the problem. However, now, when I plug  the monitor sound connection into the audio output, it cuts off all audio, both internal and external.

A friend told me that my sound card is bad. I just don't think that's the problem, however, I haven't seen this issue addressed within this forum. ANY ONE, ANY SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE ????

I haven't seen this issue addressed within this forum.

Unfortunately we get a lot of questions about headphone jacks not working.

The most common is that the audio driver is not calibrated correctly to sense when a plug is inserted into the jack socket. It does this by impedance sensing. The usual test is to remove the vendor's audio driver (e,g, Realtek) and re-start the laptop to let Windows install its native audio driver. If the headphones work with the native driver then the fault is with the vendor's driver, and one can try to find an older version of it or hope for an update to be released.

The second reason is that the headphone jack has failed, but that is less common.

You did not give the model of your laptop, but judging from your screen name it is an XPS 13. I have seen several posts about headphone jack failure on the latest model of that series, 9343. We (Dell owners) still have not figured out exactly what is going on with that model. No solutions yet from Dell that I know of.

I'm having the exact opposite problem on my precision m6700. I only get audio from the headphone jack.  I've checked all the settings: nothing is muted, everything is up full volume, and only the headphones work.  I uninstalled the IDT driver/control panel with the newest version - no joy.  I tried the default windows driver after uninstalling the IDT - no joy.  I'm going to try an older version, but I don't think it will work.

One other note.... audio works fine through hdmi to my tv....

Hello. Because you have a different problem on a different model, I suggest you start a new thread with a different subject line. Meanwhile take a look at section 1 of the Headphone Jack FAQ.
